  1. Update: Furniture and rooms have been measured. Diagrams have been assembled.

I'm pretty happy with the new layout of both rooms. It solves a lot of the current issues that we have in our spaces which honestly would be really nice.

It also, most importantly, does not rely on "wishful thinking" or a "make it work" approach.

I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that physics exists and only so many things can actually fit into a space.

  3. The house reset was made a lot easier by the work we put in the last year to get things into a manageable state.

Yes, it's still too much stuff (my fault... I love hobbies) for too small a physical space.

But it's workable. It won't ever be featured in magazines, but it's finally back to that baseline where someone could drop by unexpectedly and it's just fine.

We live here, and that's okay :x

  5. All of our clothing and towels are washed, dried AND put away. House is clean, floors are swept and mopped.

After a few weeks where the house was in A State and I did not see a way out of it... I'm in heaven tbh.

Huge shoutout to @kirrix who let me melt down repeatedly about the state, then just did something about it. He and kiddo rearranged kiddo's room and moved all my sewing stuff in. Then we did a massive house reset.

  7. I think it's the big oak table that stays. And I'm going to get some boards to help make it a bit more sturdy (many moves, etc have made it a smidge wobbly at the edges but I know how to fix that - it won't be pretty but it'll work and be cheap).

I am also debating a cutting table extension for it: a piece of plywood set on top and screwed in that sticks out the one edge by a foot or so (and uses the legs from the IKEA table as support). But that's a stretch goal.

    #APlaceForEverything

  8. The big decision now:

Do I keep the large oak table in there which is great because it's big SOLID oak and handmade?

Downside: made by my father which - ew. BUT I can overlook that tbh. The bigger issue is just that it's v. Large. Which is a pro and con.

The other table option is an IKEA table. It's thinner but I think a bit longer, which might be nice? It would be easier to store when taken down which I think is THE deciding factor here.

  9. It went pretty well!! Things have been moved into totes which make moving stuff around SO much easier.

After looking at the space in the room and considering that in a few months kiddo will be back in uni mostly full time we've decided to keep the one table for sewing in that room. Because they'll be gone all day so I can sew while they're out.

Still loads of space to install the new shelves. So phase 2 will be:

    * take down one table
    * set up shelves
    * done???

  10. Today is the first installment of The Great Unfuckening Part 2.

Hopefully 1-2 hrs will see most of the stuff corralled into one of the 10 beautiful new totes I have purchased (don't wanna talk about it lol). Which will let us organise the shelves better.

I know I'll be able to visualize the space a lot better when things are in totes. It's less chaos of all the separate things so it doesn't overload my brain.

  12. The other major component of this project will be relocating some storage from our bedroom to other places, so that the bedroom can store more of my current hobbies (paint and sketch stuff as well as fibre arts project bags)

My brain functions best with bins/totes for stuff. Corralling the chaos into containers is a huge win to me.

  14. My sewing stuff will relocate downstairs, and I will set up the folding table in the living room when I want to do a project. It's far from ideal, but it's better than what I have now.

With better storage my hope is we'll all breathe a little easier. In previous editions of the Unfuckening any time we've invested some $$ into proper solutions it's paid out well. I'm hopeful this will be the same.

  16. Have ordered two more shelves and some more totes from my local hardware store.

The Great Unfuckening Part 2 shall commence. Current goal/thoughts is to corral the various craft things from kiddo's room into totes which are then stored on shelves.

Originally I wanted to keep my sewing stuff set up in that room but I am feeling like that is not practical, actually. So rather than large craft tables, their room will have shelves.

  18. Slowly bringing the house back to order after the chaos of the holidays and kiddo's quick return home.

My living room is almost entirely restored and I'm over the moon about it. There's just one couch that we have always struggled with becoming the "place for stuff" that needs to be emptied and then things will be entirely sorted. (at least as much as we can with our current space + amount of stuff)

    #APlaceForEverything

  19. Hubby's just taken a big bag of my clothes off to the dono bin. They still fit and are in good condition... but I just don't wear them. So they're just taking up space in the house for no purpose.

Hoping they will bless some other fabulous fat femme with some high quality cheap clothes.

And this moves me more towards my personal goals of style and homemade clothing.

  20. We're kinda needing to speedrun going through boxes as kiddo is coming home two months earlier than planned.

My ADHD is living her best life right now lmao. Pressure! Deadlines! Something to distract me from holiday sadness!!!

Our closet is 3 sections plus the top shelf. I fully sorted one entire section today lol. MY biggest accomplishment is one large box that I thought would be difficult was quite easy to sort and that made a big difference.

  22. I decluttered 3 boxes today, started a clothes dono box, and then put away or just got rid of the crud that was in there. Managed to get down to just a small box that has some corsets I love and am hoping to fit again at some point.

We also defrosted and reorganized our standup freezer today and it's SO much better. Just a few things had escaped being added to the freezer inventory whiteboard, now remedied. Next week will try and make a dent in that!

  23. Apparently it's big autumn cleaning energy in my house today. I've cleaned out one cupboard and now I'm tackling the wire shelf pantry.

    Feels good.

  25. Cleaned out a drawer that was housing bento stuff (now stored in a tote) because packing lunches for school/work isn't a part of our lives right now.

Kept out some things like the onigiri molds as those are useful all the time. The rest is still accessible, just not taking up prime real estate in the kitchen.

The drawer now holds the weck jars and my new set of cambro prep containers. Plus beeswax wraps and thermoses.

Slowly, slowly creating the life I want.

    #APlaceForEverything

  26. To support some of my current goals I decided to do a scrub of my fridge and add some organizational stuff.

Primarily the little two drawer thing on the middle shelf which now holds all the miso pastes and dashi in one drawer, and the tofu packets in the other.

Lots of space now for the Cambro deli containers for prep for ichiju sansai meals.

    Gold stars for me!

    #APlaceForEverything

  27. Plus I ordered some plant stands that will be here at the weekend and they'll look nicer if I don't have to shove them in.

Be nice to finally have all my plants not shoved onto one single shelf. Especially as my monstera is really starting to grow. Her last leaf was bigger than my face!

    #APlaceForEverything

  28. My plan this week is to get a bit ruthless about decluttering and organizing downstairs.

    Yes it's Fine (tm)

But we're having cleaners in next week before the inlaws come, and it'd be really great to have that space just a bit nicer and less cramped round the edges.

Spring cleaning had me declutter a lot of the bedroom closet, so there's room there to shift some things out of sight w/o returning the bedroom to chaos.

    #APlaceForEverything

  29. Doom chair completed! All of my clothes have been either hung or put in their KALLAX bins in the case of lounge clothes.

I highly rec this "hack" - don't fold lounge clothes, just have bins for them. I've got tops, bottoms, bralettes/undies in bins. Each morning I can just grab out of them (everything goes together).

Next for the bedroom list is reorganizing/clearing the top of the dresser. But that is going to wait for another day.

  31. And it wasn't the result of a big weekend reset (I do acknowledge those work for some people!). This was just.. How our house is now.

My partner does do a weekly deep clean of the coffee counter and stairs. But mostly we focus on a "nightly closing" routine, as well as just tidying as we go.

I never thought we would be these people. I never thought I would be this person. But I am and I'm overjoyed.

  33. I don't know if I can quite express the joy that was having the house suitable for unexpected guests. Not having to spend frantic time doing a panic clean after getting a "hey, can I stop by?" text.

This was not the case a year ago. But, even a year ago my tidying habits were better than the year before.

Small, sustainable, changes are culminating in the kind of habits that are supporting the life I want to have and the person I want to be.

  35. We have done additional Unfuckening in the bedroom.

A good reminder that the organizational process is cyclical. Until the entire house is done, additional items will find their way into previously "done" rooms, necessitating more work.

It did not take long, thanks to all of the prior work in making space. Additional items were stowed, trash cleared, and finished off with a nice vacuum to make the space feel fresher.

  37. Update, the second basket of laundry (which was brought in as I was making dinner) was put away immediately after dinner.

ALL of the clothing that I own is put away either hanging in the closet or in the Kallax bins.

There is SPACE left. My closet and drawers are not BUSTING.

Me of 5 years ago could not even fathom being here.

  39. My whole body is sore but my brain is SO fucking happy.

Sorry not sorry that I keep gushing. Life's been so damn hard.

Things are still hard, the world is HORRIFYING. But in the Hobbit Hole we are slowly making it work.

We've decluttered, we've organized, we've worked on our own growth and are developing healthy habits. We know progress is not a straight line so we celebrate when it goes right.

I no longer feel I need to close the bedroom door when I have guests over!

  41. Other than the load of laundry in the dryer and changing the sheets... The Great Bedroom Unfuckening is complete for today!

For those playing along at home, I did manage to clear off my end table, it looks lovely.

Tomorrow I will sweep and mop (and probably do the office and bathroom at the same time).

I am just flabbergasted that this is my life. Like, truly. This peace is like nothing else.

    #APlaceForEverything

  42. My next big chore I think, which in a perfect world would happen today is my bedside table. It's still early so it's possible!

Currently it is a MESS, and that does not contribute good sleeping vibes. I'd love to have it clear enough that I could go back to lighting candles in the evening while I read. That, my friends, with some soft jazz or lofi playing, is an entire vibe which lends itself to glorious sleeps.

    #APlaceForEverything

  43. We are on Step 3.

I have a load of my dresses and skirts in the wash now. Followed by a load of my "house wardrobe" clothes. When the day ends the only clothes that will be dirty are the ones I am wearing now.

My goal is to have all of them put away and organized. All clothes in the bedroom are either in their baskets (praise Kallax shelving) or hanging.

Sheets will be changed before bed, showers will be hand, and I will sleep SO GOOD.

    #APlaceForEverything

  44. Today is the day.

    The Great Bedroom Unfuckening

I have lived in chaos in my sanctuary long enough.

Step 1 is getting everything off the floor (which is done).

Step 2 will be moving the Kallax shelves so we can hook up the AC to the window easier. So that means the antique dressing table moves from one side to the other.

Step 3 is the hardest, putting everything away. BUT thanks to years of decluttering work I think I have gotten to the point where that is more doable.

    #APlaceForEverything

  45. Tomorrow's big plan is to finally, finally get the bedroom sorted out. It's been such slow going, progress has been made but it's been languishing in a "good enough, I guess?"

    I deserve better than that!

Especially as I'm getting back into making my clothes, I wanna have room and space to get dressed easily. And put things away properly.

    #APlaceForEverything

  46. I've a lot of trauma and baggage when it comes to keeping a tidy and clean home. I've been working through it with the help of blogs, books, and long rambling posts where I talk about my journey.

Being at this place where the decluttering and organizing is so much more under control is incredible. Now I can just... clean. And keep it clean.

It's taken literal years, and there's a long way to go. But damn, proud of myself.

    #APlaceForEverything #SpringRefresh

  47. The stairs are cleared completely (omg the landing has so much space).

Bathroom counters, baseboards, mirror and toilet have been deep cleaned. (I'm saving the tub/shower for another day when my shoulder isn't screaming at me)

Last step today is a vacuum and mop. I can do this... I can do this and then I can have a latte and play Atelier Lumia

    #APlaceForEverything #SpringRefresh

  48. For sure I've reached the organize stage of the unfuckening. There isn't anything to declutter left, it's about finding homes for things.

My process for this will be to Honor the Hyperfixation.

As I think about (atm) creative pursuits, I will find the things for the thing. Then I will gather them with like things, and find a home for them.

The order will be random and nonsense but by tagging onto what my ADHD brain wants to do I think I can find more motivation.

    #APlaceForEverything

  49. The whole: cousins, coworkers, family approach is 10000% something I'm going to adopt.

And when none of those apply: "Where would I look for this if I was trying to find it?"

In my own house I have definitely reached the "organize" phase as I have decluttered a LOT. Sure there's always more to do, but it will be a lot harder and I'd rather, for now, just organize to give myself the space for those decisions.

    #APlaceForEverything #organizing

  50. For me fellow people who are constantly struggling with organizing and decluttering... I stumbled on this account today:

    instagram.com/iorganizeeveryth

And it literally talks you through HOW to decide where something goes. One would think "oh yeah, everyone knows how to do that"

I do not. Perhaps you also do not.

(this is not a space to discuss your opinions about instagram/meta, pls do that on your own account, not in my replies)

    #APlaceForEverything #organizing

  51. Feeling some spring cleaning energy today and I am *excited* for it.

Tackled a huge chunk of the disaster corner behind the couch and it's a lot less shame-inducing now (pls note this is personal shame and not a statement that I think messy houses are shameful, I do not... unless it's mine. aren't brains great?)

Slowly, slowly I am making progress on this house and it feels SO good. Baby steps towards the life I want to live.

    #APlaceForEverything #SpringCleaning

  52. We cleaned and organized the ever loving fuck outta the house this past week.

Is it perfect? No. We still have too much stuff for the space. But things are way less cluttered and contained in drawers and totes. Everything is sparkly and I'm basking in a nice living room while I get ready to eat my weight in fried foods (I love Hanukkah).

This is the most hopeful I have ever felt in my entire fucking life on new years eve.

    #APlaceForEverything #MySlowLife #HobbitEra

  53. I have one last large doom pile in my bedroom. I really want to tackle it today so that I can go into next year with a relatively organized bedroom.

There's no reason I can't tackle it today, except my asshole brain that will not allow it.

People who think it's just laziness or whatever really do not understand the struggle of a neurospicy brain.

    #APlaceForEverything

  54. All of my cleaning and organizing caught up with me today.

We did not go for a walk, and I had a little meltdown and a panic attack (unrelated) instead.

But we did assemble the last Ikea shelf and I unpacked and shelved the contents of all the boxes at the end of the bed. Plus I deep cleaned the espresso counter and put the last of the turkey stock into souper cubes after moving the first batch into stasher bags.

Progress is happening, slowly but surely.

    #MySlowLife #APlaceForEverything

  55. The professional organizers come tomorrow for their consultation. Part of the instructions are NOT to clean so that they can see where the "problem areas" are. But hoooo boy does that go against everything in my brain, lmao.

I'm a bit scared it's going to cost a bajillionty dollars... but I honestly believe it's going to help my mental health so much. Person agrees muchly.

And the truth is, no one that lives here has the spoons to unpack and organize.

    #APlaceForEverything

  56. Just booked a professional organizer to come in for a consultation. I'm so fucking excited.

    Will it be spendy? Yes.

Will I save money in the long run because having a space that isn't a disaster will give me the ability to cook more at home, use the things I already own, and just generally like being in my space more? Absolutely.

Looking forward to this process (and ofc will share here because I'm a chronic oversharer, welcome to my feed, lmao)

    #MySlowLife #APlaceForEverything

  57. Tomorrow's plan is to mostly not work (minus monitoring my email).

Hoping to have some spoons to do stuff.

    👕 Laundry
    🍋 Lemon chiffon cake
    🚽 Clean the bathroom
🎮 Baldur's Gate 3 (maybe I'll find my way through the swamp? no spoilers pls)

Trying to balance resting from work, and good things (cake! games!) with still making progress on this place.

    #MySlowLife #APlaceForEverything

  58. The other thing I'm sort of focusing on but hadn't entirely realized it is tasks that are closer to the one and done.

Deep cleaning my fridge, for example, isn't exactly a do it once, done forever kind of deal. But it's not as much of a daily or weekly thing.

Vs. clearing the kitchen island which I did yesterday that seems to be a fairly frequent task as it's a dumping ground for "stuff".

But having the fridge done inspires me! I don't hate the kitchen as much.

    #APlaceForEverything

  59. I'm also considering my neurospicy brain that is highly motivated to do the shiny thing and struggles with executive (dys)function for things like "chores" and "musts".

So it's a bit of a balance. I'm primarily focusing on spaces and things that

    A) can be done in a day, or two at most, before I run out of steam
    B) have an immediate impact on my experience of my home

Tasks that are a combo of these two things are perfect for me and my silly brain weasels.

    #APlaceForEverything

  60. Thinking about how to approach this home purging project...

Most advice seems to be to start with the area that is most impactful when you walk into your home. A lot of the reasoning for this tied to the impression it gives guests.

I get the logic, but the truth of the current reality is that I do not have guests into my home.

The other part is... I'm not doing this for guests. It's for ✨ me ✨ To create a space I don't hate being in.

    #APlaceForEverything
