Please, never just say "hi" when you message someone you never talked with before.

Instead, in addition to a polite greeting, say a little about yourself and why you're messaging the person.

This creates a connection right away, makes you interesting, and gives a topic to discuss. This also makes most folks less likely to simply ignore you and/or get annoyed by you.

Want to make friends? Don't just say hello. Instead, give a reason for the other person to want to talk with you.

Also, NEVER message just to sell your goods/services.
