    A: Andre The Giant

He lived at a ranch there since his early wrestling days. They've got a museum with his size 26 cowboy boots.

  11. Us old heads wrestling fans remember what Andre FELT like.

Before the internet, before spoilers, before overexposure… Andre felt impossible. Larger than life in a way wrestling may never fully recreate again.

Happy Birthday to a true wrestling attraction.

Andre the Giant wasn’t just a wrestler.

He was an attraction. A myth. A moment in wrestling history that felt impossible to recreate.

  22. The Personal Web

I’ve written before about how I’m trying to embrace the POSSE (Post on your Own Site, Syndicate Everywhere) model. In the last week I’ve seen some great back-and-forth discussion in my feed especially via Manton Reece of micro.blog and Jason Becker (whom I originally met in the 5by5 IRC channel).

Jason got at the heart of how I think about blogging and cross-posting:

POSSE is a profoundly egalitarian idea. I am never going to get all of the people I’m connected to online to go back to using RSS. And I’m not going to get them to bookmark my webpage and visit it multiple times a day. They have places they consistently read feeds. I’m having a lot more fun writing on my blog because people do reply to my posts, or comment in various ways, wherever they are.

I also enjoyed his follow up POSSE Is Still Cool. He reiterates an idea that I agree with: cross-posting your blog posts (in link or excerpt form) to commercial platforms is rather different than directly posting and engaging on those platforms. It allows you to reach your connections who are there. It’s about people.

This is where I really like the term “personal web”, which I found on Manuel’s blog (via Jason and Manton). Manuel highlights the difference between a personal web and social media:

When I talk about the social aspects of the web, I’m not talking about social media. I’m talking about the exact opposite. I’m talking about liberating yourself from all sorts of algorithmic grouping and filtering and getting back to experiencing and using the web in a much more deliberate and mindful way.

This point is exactly why I always used a third party app like Twitterrific (RIP) to get subsets of my Twitter feed, in order, and why I like a similar experience on Mastodon in Ivory.

That is the web I’m arguing for. A web that is intentional, where what you consume is curated by you and you alone, where connections with others happen because you made the conscious effort to connect.

Since I first built a Geocities site for myself some time in late 1998, complete with handcrafted <frameset>s and a guestbook, I’ve liked the idea of having a public place online to call my own and connect with friends as well as people with similar interests. That’s the personal web… and the web I want.

At the same time I know most people experience the web today through large social media platforms, and that’s okay too. I want to meet them where they are. (Unless it’s the Site Formerly Known as Twitter.) That means syndication!

    Syndicate Everywhere

Here are all the ways my blog is currently available:

I suppose I could also use Jetpack’s LinkedIn integration, but that’s where my worksona mostly just posts feature announcements for my service. I sometimes also manually post links to Bluesky (since there’s no WordPress integration for AT yet)… maybe I need to set up EchoFeed?

    Facebook Cross-Posting

One example of maintaining connections on a commercial social media platform is how about a month ago I created a Facebook Page to mirror my blog to Facebook.

I have over 600 friends accumulated over the past almost 20 years, even though I haven’t actively posted on Facebook since 2019. It’s really the only place I have a connection with some extended family and a number of old college and high school classmates, as well as other communities. There are probably other ways to reach people but a lot of folks remain active there.

While I don’t have a lot of visitors, with cross-posting enabled, I see the majority of my traffic now coming from there.

    ReferrerViewsFacebook61Google12Threads5Baidu3Bing2Twitter1Tumblr1LearnedLeague1Yandex1My Site1

I’m not sure for certain how Facebook manages the Page in anyone’s algorithmic feed, but it has more reactions and comments than my blog gets directly and isn’t getting my personal profile flagged for spam anymore. Of course Facebook is also prompting me to use their various tools to promote and monetize my page, which I’m just ignoring.

  23. Did you know that Andre the Giant has a posse? & that the same artist that made this stickers designed the Obama Hope and Harris Forward posters?

These stickers were everywhere in SE college towns in the 90s and 2000s.
