.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 944 PM CDT Wed May 13 2026- A significant warming trend will take place this weekend into early next week as daytime highs will climb into the lower 90s each day.
NEAR TERM
(Today) Issued at 214 AM CDT Thu May 14 2026
The passage of a cold front Wednesday afternoon has left us solidly in northwest flow in its wake. As such, cooler and drier air is filtering into the TN Valley. Dew points have already dropped to the mid to low 40s, with temps lagging behind slightly but expected to drop into the high 40s to low 50s by sunrise.
Through the day, surface high pressure will build in the Midwest reinforcing northerly flow at the surface. The NNW winds at the surface and aloft will provide enough CAA to keep temps several degrees cooler than yesterday with highs restrained to the low to mid 70s.
SHORT TERM
(Thursday night through Saturday) Issued at 944 PM CDT Wed May 13 2026
A good setup for radiational cooling Thursday night as winds decouple in a clear sky and dry air mass. As a result, low temperatures will plummet into the low to mid 40s by early Friday morning. This should be the last of the "springtime" temperatures as an upper ridge axis will build into the Tennessee Valley Friday into the weekend. This will result in a pronounced warming trend as winds veer to the south, with mostly sunny conditions both days. As a result, highs will warm into the lower 80s on Friday and the mid to upper 80s by Saturday.

Updated at 1032 PM CDT Tue May 12 2026- A significant warming trend will take place this weekend into early next week as daytime highs will climb into the lower 90s each day.
NEAR TERM
(Today) Issued at 233 AM CDT Wed May 13 2026
Fairly tranquil night with clear skies and light winds have allowed temps to cool into the 50s for most of the area. Aside from some passing mid level clouds, benign weather will prevail through sunrise.
Todays weather focal point will be a a deepening upper level low, moving through the Great Lakes region. Its associated surface cold front will sink through the TN Valley this afternoon. Ahead of this, surface high pressure along the southern Atlantic coast will keep skies clear allowing temps to heat into the low 80s for most of the area. The front looks to move through from around 2 PM - 8 PM. The passing front will provide just enough lift for some light showers with best chances for areas east of I-65. Models are consistent in showing showers, yet the coverage will be very modest with best chances around 25% in NE AL. The more widespread evidence of the frontal passage will be via the increase in wind speeds as winds back to the NW behind the front. Through the afternoon gusts of around 15-20 MPH will be possible.
SHORT TERM
(Wednesday night through Friday night) Issued at 1032 PM CDT Tue May 12 2026
This next upper system will deepen as if moves over upstate New York on Thursday, and induce more troughing across the eastern portion of the Continent as we close out the work week. High pressure following the front will build over this area from the NW on Thursday. The coldest air with this system should be felt more from the Mid Atlantic and northward. But enough of it filtering southward will bring cooler temperatures across the Tennessee Valley, with Wednesday night lows around 50 areawide. A cooler trend will continue Thursday with highs only in the low/mid 70s, and lows in the night from the mid 40s east to around 50 west.
The surface high should quickly build east of the area late Thursday into Friday. Winds will become more from the south as we go into Friday. This along with more sun than clouds should help temperatures warm into the upper 70s to lower 80s. Not as chilly Friday night with lows ranging from the mid 50s east to lower 60s west. All in all, dry weather is expected for the short term.

.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 1014 PM CDT Mon May 11 2026- We are monitoring the potential for much above normal temperatures this weekend.
NEAR TERM
(Today) Issued at 209 AM CDT Tue May 12 2026
2 AM satellite shows an area of rain and storms currently progressing across the Gulf coast. This is supported by the passage of a cut off low in the mid levels to our south with its associates surface cold front moving through southern AL/GA and into the FL Peninsula. Cloud cover associated with these features currently blankets much of the TN Valley. Despite this, weak CAA through the day has allowed for cooler and drier air to filter in with temps dipping into the high 40s to low 50s come sunrise.
Through the day, skies will clear as both the cut off low and associated cold front push SE. High pressure to our east will build, inducing SE surface flow. As winds veer to the southeast through the morning, subtle WAA from the Gulf Stream will slightly raise both temps and dewpoints this afternoon. Temps will be a few degrees warmer, in the upper 70s to low 80s, with dew points returning to the 50s.
SHORT TERM
(Tuesday night through Thursday night) Issued at 1014 PM CDT Mon May 11 2026
Slightly milder conditions are expected Tuesday night, as a southerly flow continues. Lows by daybreak Wednesday should range from the low/mid 50s. Real spring-like warmth should be realized Wednesday with highs rising into the lower 80s.
An upper level low currently over southern Alberta will head ESE over the next few days. By late Thursday, it will have developed into a closed upper low over the eastern Great Lakes and Mid Atlantic. A cold front trailing south of this system`s surface low will move across the Tennessee Valley Wednesday afternoon/evening, bringing lower end chances of showers in the afternoon, primarily east of the I-65 corridor. Cooler air in the wake of the front will filter in, keeping lows in the low/mid 50s. A bit cooler Thursday under sunny skies with highs in the low/mid 70s. The more chilly air will be more felt Thursday night, with lows falling into the mid 40s to around 50.

.KEY MESSAGES...
Updated at 943 PM CDT Sun May 10 2026- Low chances (30% or less) of showers overnight, primarily in NW AL and southern middle TN
- Monitoring the potential for much above normal temperatures this weekend
NEAR TERM
(Today) Issued at 221 AM CDT Mon May 11 2026
As of around 2 AM, the cold front looks to be bisecting our forecast area as indicated by a change of wind speed and direction in observations. Along and behind the front, winds have backed to the north and increased slightly. Cloud cover and light rain currently moving through middle TN can also be seen along and behind the front. Through the early morning hours, clouds and rain will continue to progress east, yet the heaviest/highest coverage of both look to remain well to our north. Thus, our TN counties may be the only ones to see some light rain, elsewhere will likely remain entirely dry.
Through the day, skies will clear as the front progresses to the SE and high pressure builds in from the north. The weak CAA will limit highs to the mid to upper 70s. Drier air aloft looks to move in this afternoon and could prompt some breezy conditions. Post frontal winds already look to be elevated with gusts of around 15 MPH. Should some drier air aloft mix down, isolated higher gusts are likely late this afternoon.
SHORT TERM
(Monday night through Wednesday) Issued at 943 PM CDT Sun May 10 2026
Post-frontal conditions are forecast to remain dry as sfc high pressure shifts in from the northwest and remains over the TN Valley through mid week. Highs during this time are forecast to warm into the upper 70s to lower 80s under mostly clear skies. Overnight lows are forecast to drop into the 50s. These temperatures are considered seasonally normal for this time of year. A pattern shift, however, is coming with the potential to bring above normal temperatures back to the area (more on this in the long term below).
