  2. "Best" of 2025
Despite <gestures vaguely into the ether>, I have had much to be grateful for. I live in a beautiful place but way too far away from my family living in Anchorage. I had the extreme privilege of spending many days with them in #AK in 2025. One magical moment was peeping the normally shrouded #Aleutian chain and seeing the majesty of the #Iliamna volcano.

  4. Freaking 8.8??? Damn.

I'm hoping the people (not many, but I know some folks do) that live on/work out in #Kamchatsky Peninsula and the distant ends of the #Aleutian Islands are okay and not in too horrible a state of shock right now; idek how it must have felt.

I hope the tsunami doesn't cause terrible damage around the pacific but... an 8.8 is *a lot* of power for the ocean to disperse. Stay safe, y'all. And stay away from beaches and low ground for the next few hours.

  6. #Shishaldin RED/WARNING
    Fri, Sept 15, 2023, 5:41 PM AKDT
An explosive eruption from Shishaldin began ~ 5:10 p.m. AKDT on September 15, 2023 following a several-hour increase in seismicity.

Ash is currently being produced and is drifting to the east below the cloud deck of 27,000 ft above sea level. The Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level is being raised to RED/WARNING. Recent significant ash events during the current eruption resulted in ash clouds with heights up to 40,000 ft (12 km) above sea level. These events can occur with little warning. It is also possible that ash emissions may occur at a lower-level, steady state and be sustained for many hours. AVO is monitoring the volcano closely and will issue additional Volcanic Activity Notices to provide notice of significant changes in activity as they occur. Shishaldin activity page:

  8. Research reveals sources of CO2 from Aleutian-Alaska Arc volcanoes
    [the_ad id="30587"]

Scientists have wondered what happens to the organic and inorganic carbon that Earth’s Pacific Plate carries with it as it slides into the planet’s interior along the volcano-studded Ring of Fire.

A new study suggests a notable amount of such subducted carbon returns...
