  1. Its great when fossils you found, and helped others find, get used for research. Today the scores of wallaby bones that we have found at Alcoota are getting some attention

  6. One of the things that makes Baru iylwenpeny so special is that we have a lot of it. There are seven skulls, and dozens of postcranial bones This makes it the single most completely known mekosuchine crocodile in Australia, if not the world (there are apparently a lot of Mekosuchus inexpectatus bones - but little of it is published and I don't think there is a whole skull known).

  11. Here is a picture of the holotype of Baru iylwenpeny being excavated. It comes from the fantastically rich, dense bonebed of Alcoota, a mass death assemblage from the Late Miocene (about 8 million years old) in central Australia

  15. arleyekweke isn't the only arandic name in palaeontology. There is also Alkwertatherium. You might think that this is pronounced "Alk - wer - tah - ther - ee - um" but you'd be wrong. The 'we' letter combination makes an 'oo' sound, so it is "Al- coort - ah - ther - ee - um", in other words it is named after the site of #Alcoota, from whence it came. 🧵

  23. Today I had the pleasure of attending the opening of Engawala Art Centre. Engawala is an Aboriginal community very close to the Alcoota fossil site. We have been working together with the artists of Engawala, to sell some of their work at Megafauna Central, and bringing the artists to the fossils so that they may create Alcoota-themed works. 1/2

  33. A couple of months back I had the pleasure of meeting David Strassman, who I found out is an avid palaeontology enthusiast. We had a grand old time wandering #MegaFaunaCentral and ended up recording an episode for his podcast: paleonerds.com/podcast/adamyat
Check it out if you want hear more about central Australian geology and the Alcoota fossil site.

  38. @mike The human eye (and brain to, I suppose) is so much better than a camera at picking out subtle features. But yes, Alcoota can be a tough place to spot fossils (many an important specimen has chunks missing because it took a while for the excavator to realise they were digging into a bone).

  42. #FossilFriday Here is the most complete skull ever found of the Alcoota Wallaby, Dorcopsoides fossilis, in early stages of preparation. 'Dorcs' , as we call them, are interesting because although they are not very old (approx. 8 ma) they may be the oldest 'true' (macropodine) kangaroos. I'll post the finished skull some other Friday.
