Loving #ACityOnMars so far. What irks me a bit though is the subtext that "idea X about living in space is naive because nobody but us has ever thought it through". It's very funny to read but... there's #SciFi movies and literature about all of this! Millions upon millions of pages have been written about why humans won't magically become better people in space or how living in a metal tube is vastly more difficult than living on even the most hostile place on earth... #TheExpanse

Written by the creators of SMBC comic, A City on Mars was a good pop-sci read that delves into the technological, social, physiological, psychological and legal reasons why a space settlement on Moon/Mars in our lifetime might be a challenge. There is so much to hammer out besides just the rockets to get there. Almost every page of the book has their comic illustrations!

Written by the creators of SMBC comic, A City on Mars was a good pop-sci read that delves into the technological, social, physiological, psychological and legal reasons why a space settlement on Moon/Mars in our lifetime might be a challenge. There is so much to hammer out besides just the rockets to get there. Almost every page of the book has their comic illustrations!

@ZachWeinersmith Having read the #ACityOnMars book, I kind of think the author's have a pretty good point that building settlements in space in the near term is a bad idea.
Mostly because the only point of doing that would be to create a backup world for humanity (and also charismatic megafauna), which might not be technically feasible at the moment, would need a ginormous amount of space colonists to even work and might increase existential risks to Earth in the short term.

Feeling a little bummed out after the latest episode of Planetary Radio. Now I'm not so sure I want to live on Mars after all. Still glad I listened. A lot of good information. Kelly and Zack Weinersmith made some interesting points that I'd never really thought about before.
