Regular warning regarding backups and data recovery with Windows 11 25H2 and Bitlocker encryption.
By default, new installations of Windows 11 25H2 have BitLocker automatically enabled, on laptops and desktops.
In theory, the BitLocker recovery keys are transferred to the online Microsoft Account settings when you login that way on Windows 11.
If you use a Windows local account only then it's not backed up. Nor are you prompted to do so. This is very obviously a potentially dangerous state.
If you're going with a local account only Windows 11 OS installation then:
- Backup the recovery keys safely offline,
AND
- Keep unencrypted backups of important data off the system (ideally several copies stored separately)
OR
- Disable BitLocker
Unless you have a very specific use case or "interesting" threat model then disabling BitLocker is my suggestion.
Once BitLocker it's disabled then ensure you are taking regular backups of import data off the PC, ideally multiple copies in separate places for redundancy.
Hardware and storage media do fail. Motherboards and their TPM / UEFI Firmware data do get damaged. That's where the BitLocker encryption keys are stored.
If the BitLocker recovery information on the motherboard is damaged or unrecoverable, your BitLocker encrypted data will be unrecoverable without the recovery keys.

So, #Microsoft. Danke einer perfekten Anleitung* von WindowsArea kann jede Person etwas Geld sparen und noch etwas gegen den Klimawandel tun. Wieso? Einfach die aktuelle Hardware weiternutzen und das neuste #Windows11 #25H2 nutzen. Trotz angeblicher ,nicht kompatibler' CPU und fehlendem #tpm.
Die eigene Erfahrung mit einem #Windows 11 22H2 Rechner hat gezeigt: #23H2 und #24H2 können problemlos ,übersprungen' werden. Ohne Rechner*neu*kauf. Der Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700K läuft ohne Probleme.

Mit großem Tamtam wird auf das Ende von #Windows10 hingewiesen, aber #Win11 23H2 bekommt auch keine Updates mehr und wird ebenso verwundbar.
Warum ist das ein Problem? Weil man ein aktives #TPM benötigt um von 23H2 upzugraden. Früher konnte man Win11 auch ohne #TPM recht einfach #aktivieren, zum Beispiel auf älteren PCs oder in einer VM. Das fällt jetzt auf, und bedeutet Neukauf des PCs oder sogar Ersatz der VM-Hostrechner wegen fehlendem #TPM Chip.
Oder man installiert #Linux auf dem PC, zum Beispiel Linux #mint .

Already checked that StartAllBack added support for it last month, and has since had a further update this month for small bug fixes, but wanted to double-check ahead of time before doing an update before finding out it's breaking stuff 😅
Ideally trying to avoid spending a lot of time and energy fixing stuff (e.g., networking, particularly network drives) like with a previous update.
(Just to pre-empt some comments, honestly presently don't have the energy, time, patience, or executive function to migrate to a Linux distro, and likely won't for the foreseeable future, so please kindly don't suggest it. Thanks 🩷🫶)

If you do update to Windows 11 25H2 check the encryption status on your boot volume.
On mine, it enabled BitLocker without any user interaction or warning.
I have a local account, so where was it expecting to store the recovery key? 🤔
