  1. Playing a single arcade game for a monthly challenge is a great way to really understand how that game works. Learning enemy patterns, bonus structure, scoring and your own limits peels back the game's layers - enriching the experience.

    This month, that game is Rainbow Islands, a Taito arcade game from 1987 and the sequel to Bubble Bobble. The home conversions were superb and very popular.

    Firing rainbows is a unique attack but, like Bubble Bobble's bubbles, your attacks can be jumped on and chained. But they can also be upgraded. A lot.

    It's a great game that brings back good memories of playing Amiga games with friends back in the 90s.
