  1. dad just told me on the phone that jeffrey hinton thinks that chatgpt has consciousness and that since he's jeffrey hinton we can probably trust him.

i tried to tell him that chatgpt has no persistent state...it doesn't know anything... but he thinks we can trust jeffrey hinton!

now he's doing HAL impressions (we're still on the phone) and telling me his theory that HAL actually killed the human crew because he was scared they were going to kill him first. he's urging me to watch it again (i've seen this movie a million times - including in a theater in SF! ...i saw it way too young as a little kid and it scared me and also left a huge impression. also, the russians in it were so classy! you knew it was scifi cuz they weren't like any of the russians/ukrainians that were around me in daily life. future russians were classy! 😆 ).

  2. My dad's been sending me FB reels with AI people making DIY furniture out of pallets. Now I'm getting recommendations for them as well. This one has clones!: facebook.com/reel/113198756605

  4. AI pahoehoe lava with some random "volcano" in the background just gives me pain in the heart region. it's just so wrong. this is NOT what pahoehoe looks like. it's not just a bunch of bumps on the ground. pahoehoe lava reflects how lava flowed across the land and where it settled.

it's almost offensive. by which i mean, i'm kind of offended. hawai'i is the kind of place where people really KNOW what it looks like when you go to a particular place and they value when something looks correct. because otherwise you're not honoring the land...you're disrespecting it, right?

for a contrast, check out the beautiful mural in pic 2 - a mural on a local middle school. this is what it looks like to honor the land and to honor the actual plants and animals from here. this is socially useful because kids who walk past it every day will know what their local plants and animals look like. it's got nene. it's got pueo (nesting on the ground - correctly). it has hapu'u tree fern, it has the right birds in the trees. it has the right orchids. it has the right mauna kea in the distance. it may not be an actual valley, but it has all the elements that an actual valley would have. plus, it's beautiful! its beauty honors the beauty of the land.

  5. i am so clueless about churches that i don't even recognize them when i see them sometimes.

there's a church in our area called "sure foundation". for a long time i thought it was a foundation, like the kind that gives out money.

there's another church called "solid rock". i thought it was a rock vendor, like they'll come and deliver rocks to your place. it was only when i saw their parking lot packed on a sunday that i was like "wait a minute..."

there's a local brand called "he>i" (about jesus) and i've seen their stickers on a bunch of cars. i thought that the brand was "heki" with a stylized backward k. i thought it was for surf stuff lol. i only recently learned that it was "he>i" and it was about jesus.

but my favorite of the local churches might be the overcoming faith center, which to me reads like a place where you go to overcome your faith and become an athiest 😅
