Unreviewed science in the news: The evolution of preprint media coverage from 2014-2021 https://doi.org/10.1101/2023.07.10.548392
This preprint by Alice Fleerackers, Kenneth Shores, Natascha Chtena and @juancommander shows how the COVID-19 pandemic led to a major increase in media coverage of preprints.
I just published a review of this preprint https://doi.org/10.21428/7ccec04a.e1d7801e.
Another review can be found at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.8232591.

In June this year the team of @opencitations published a highly informative paper about OpenCitations Meta, a new database created by the OpenCitations team that provides access to open metadata for many millions of scientific outputs https://arxiv.org/abs/2306.16191v1.
I just published a short review of this paper https://ludowaltman.pubpub.org/pub/review-opencitations-meta/release/1. I very much enjoyed reading the paper, but also have some suggestions for improvements.

Hongyu Zhou, @rafguns and Tim Engels have preprinted not only the initial version but also all subsequent versions of their paper 'Towards indicating interdisciplinarity: Characterizing interdisciplinary knowledge flow' https://doi.org/10.48550/arXiv.2207.10722.
This is a great example of how preprinting should be done! It has allowed me to publish open reviews of all three versions of the paper. I just published a review of the 3rd (much improved!) version https://ludowaltman.pubpub.org/pub/review-indicating-interdisciplinarity/release/1.

I have written a review of a preprint that presents a review of the literature on the use of preprints!
The preprint by Amanda Blatch-Jones, Alejandra Recio Saucedo and Beth Giddins: https://doi.org/10.31235/osf.io/nug4p
My review of this preprint: https://ludowaltman.pubpub.org/pub/review-scoping-review-preprints/release/2

@mbirna #Qeios is definitely a legitimate platform. They offer an innovative way to facilitate preprinting and open peer review. #Qeios is also a supporter of the @ASAPbio #PublishYourReviews initiative https://asapbio.org/publishyourreviews.
I fully agree we need more public scholarly debate instead of traditional closed peer review focused on accept/reject decisions. As reviewer I'm increasingly investing my time in new open forms of peer review.

@cwts I must say I'm a bit confused by the approach taken by the #ISSI2023 colleagues.
We're all talking about open science these days, which means research results should be shared as early and as openly as possible, so that they can be debated publicly and can benefit from public feedback.
Asking authors to "refrain from depositing the conference materials to a preprint service until after the conference" discourages authors to adopt open science practices!
-
Interesting to see different views within the scientometric community on how to organize publication and peer review of conference papers.
The colleagues organizing the #ISSI2023 conference explicitly discourage preprinting of papers submitted to the conference https://cns-iu.github.io/workshops/2023-07-02_issi/faq.html. I think discouraging preprinting is quite problematic.
At @cwts we will soon announce the model we use for the #STI_ENID2023 conference. Our model will essentially be the opposite of the model used by #ISSI2023!

Sorbonne’s embrace of free research platform shakes up academic publishing https://on.ft.com/48xmIpP
#FinancialTimes coverage of the decision by #SorbonneUniversity to cancel its #WebOfScience subscription and replace it by @OpenAlex.
I wouldn't be surprised to see more news items like this in 2024!
For the original announcement by Sorbonne, see https://www.sorbonne-universite.fr/en/news/sorbonne-university-unsubscribes-web-science.
-
Important news:
#SorbonneUniversity will "discontinue its subscription to #WebOfScience publication database and #Clarivate bibliometric tools ... opening the way for open, free and participative tools." https://www.sorbonne-universite.fr/en/news/sorbonne-university-unsubscribes-web-science
Sorbonne's "choices are in line with those of @cwts, which has announced it is making openness of research information a priority, and is currently working on fully transparent and reproducible version of its rankings, based on open data from @crossref and @OpenAlex."

By the way, I reviewed this paper for a journal that uses #EditorialManager. I hate this system. Submitting my review to the journal took more time than publishing it openly on the wonderful #PubPub platform.
Why do we still do peer review in this clumsy old-fashioned way?

Why it’s crucial that universities collaborate on metrics fit for the future https://www.leru.org/news/leru-paper-enhancing-research-evaluation-with-next-generation-metrics-interview-paul-wouters
Interview with Paul Wouters about #LERU Next Generation Metrics report.
"present obsession with global university rankings is totally misplaced and really leads universities astray"
"@cwts #LeidenRanking ... has open metadata. If a university wants to know its position in internationally oriented research ... it can simply grab the data from the ranking and check its position itself"

Final siren for rankings game? https://futurecampus.com.au/2024/01/30/final-siren-for-rankings-game/
"We're used to thinking of rankings and evaluation data as something that's done to us. In new open data world, we all have stake in making data and analysis processes better. Data in new #OpenEdition of #LeidenRanking is not perfect, nor is #WebOfScience data used in traditional ranking. But if you correct your listing at @ResearchOrgs or send list of affiliation corrections to @OpenAlex that data is made available to everyone globally."
