#Introduction

Hello fediverse,

I am an interdisciplinary theoretical and numerical physicist working at #CNRS and newly affiliated with the SETE in Moulis, Ariège, France, a cutting-edge experimental and theoretical ecology lab researching the impacts of global anthropogenic changes on biodiversity and ecosystems.

For 20+ years before, I was an astrophysicist working at the large Institut de Recherche en Astrophysique et Planétologie IRAP in Toulouse .

In 2023, deeply concerned by the ongoing global crises, I decided to initiate a gradual shift of my research in theoretical and numerical astrophysics (from the Sun to cosmological scales) , plasmas physics and fluid dynamics at IRAP to research the impacts of global anthropogenic changes on ecosystem dynamics and biodiversity.

I tell the ongoing story of this academic transition and related ethical research musings in a blog, "Looking up".

I am still in the process of building the foundations of my research in ecology, oriented on the theoretical and numerical modelling of ecosystem dynamics in space and time, and how they may shift through sudden bifurcations or more gradual erosion under anthropogenic pressures, with the long-term goal of informing their conservation and restoration. In parallel, I am due to take on a leadership role at SETE in a few months.

While I already had an account on mastodon and even before that on twitter mixing my personal and scientist life, from now on this will be my main academic account talking about environmental science and research policy in an official capacity, while the other will become private and strictly personal.

I may still post the occasional #Birdphotography and #NaturePhotography of #LariegeCestMoche here to pimp this new TL though 😎

Depuis mes premiers travaux sur l’islam politique, j’ai toujours défendu l’idée que ces mouvements dits ou stigmatisés comme « islamistes » devaient être analysés comme des acteurs politiques inscrits dans une histoire et dans un contexte social, et non comme une simple pathologie religieuse ou sécuritaire.

Cette approche m’a conduit à contester la criminalisation systématique de l’ensemble de ces courants islamistes et à privilégier une lecture banalement identitaire et politique des circonstances de leur émergence.

Or cette lecture demeure à ce jour minoritaire. Elle se heurte à des représentations profondément enracinées et solidement « promues », à la fois par les élites occidentales, par une large partie des élites dirigantes arabes ou encore du puissant acteur israélien qui cherche à « dépolitiser » et à « confessionnaliser » (les Palestiniens nous résistent car ils sont musulmans) la résistance que leur expansionnisme territorial génère inévitablement.

Reification and objectification

"The notion of objectification concerns an interpersonal relationship, the individual action targeted by morality and law [...]. The notion of objectification, understood in this way, dispenses with a critical theory of society, which is central to the concept of reification. The emphasis is on individual responsibility, on the condemnation of singular acts, rather than on the social structures that demand, authorise or perpetuate these behaviours."

"In her book Dialectics of the Body, Lisa Yun Lee proposes an understanding of reification in Adorno based on the question of the body: the body forgotten by scientific modernity, the repressed body associated with nature and the feminine, the body mutilated by identity violence, and the commodity and spectacle body, instrumentalised for production (Yun Lee, 2004). "All reification is an oblivion": an oblivion of suffering, a collective anaesthesia to the effects of domination systematically organised and reproduced by reification."
