  1. Anecdote from my partner:

"I have just installed 96TB of disk space in an external enclosure on [work computer]. [coworker] wants it for storing astronomical images. The first time I installed a disk drive on a computer it was 48 years ago and the drive held 90kB. Today's storage is one billion times larger.

Moore's Law is really about chips and not disks, and says that things double every two years. According to that, a billion-fold increase should take 60 years, so I'm somewhat ahead of that rate."

  2. New England has direct democracy for town government in many towns. Which means that anybody can go to town meeting where we decide on the budget and zoning laws and pretty much anything in the town. There are committees that figure out the important bits, and there's a board of selectmen and various other elected boards, but it's the people who actually get to decide.

It's a bit of a zoo. Because anybody can get up and object to something and make an amendment -- and they do! And then they object to the meeting moderator's call of the voice vote and make us all have a standing vote. But, it is still kind of cool, despite everything taking way longer than it ought to. We were there for five hours on Monday night and four hours on Tuesday night.

Of course, in some ways it's really "non-representative democracy", because a lot of people don't go, because it's not convenient for them to be awake until midnight (it wasn't really convenient for me, but I stayed anyway), or they just don't care enough to spend their evening sitting around the high school auditorium listening to people drone on about this or that planning board initiative.

  3. @AmericaMourns

I sent my #PostcardOfProtest today for the #IdesOfTrump. I used an old Sierra Club freebie, and wrote on it "don't cut the EPA; we need clean water and clean air"

We also need a lot of other things too, but it was themely, there wasn't much space to write, and probably nobody actually going to read it.

  8. @dplattsf ...aaaand the #BostonGlobe censored today's Doonesbury. Thanks for posting the real one.

  9. Happy #EarliestSunset day! (At the latitude of Boston MA, anyway. YMMV if else-latitude.)

Gory details on why the earliest sunset isn't on the day of the winter solstice:

(Looks like it translates to #EarliestSunrise at the same latitude in the southern hemisphere.)

  10. We are switching to #Verizon #Fios. There was a foo foo rah about our #staticIP: the installer thought it didn't go on our server, but on his router, and if we wanted the server to have one, we had to buy more. After he left, we discovered #DMZhost on the router, which theoretically does exactly the right thing.

Are there any gotchas about using this mechanism to get our static IP assigned to our server for "everything that isn't their voice over IP box"?

  14. After dinner I realized that today is my #HalfBirthday! So I made myself a half birthday cake. I had a tiny amount of green icing left over from a previous birthday celebration, and it just barely covered the top half cake, so I had to use jam between the layers. Then my friend decided to decorate it for me, using tweezers to place sprinkles in the shape of the right numbers.

#donated to #harris2024 though by paper check so they won't get it for a few days. Don't want to be spammed by #ActBlue for the next three decades.

  19. Changed the battery in a little timer that got very sad about trying to beep.

I think that companies should be prohibited from calling their batteries "green cell" if they are not #rechargeable! In small letters it said "may explode if recharged" like all nonrechargeable's do.

  20. I went! It was great! 75°, partly sunny, fairly windy which allowed everybody's flags to stream out beautifully and keep everybody cool. My train was slightly late, so I missed the leadoff with Dykes on Bikes, but there were so many people! We walked to the tail end and watched all the rainbow-washing corporate groups. It was over two hours from beginning to final group passes the start line! Then we got to see all the street sweepers following the parade for cleanup.
