  1. Another example for beer would be Budweiser, which was originally made (and the Czech one still is) in Czech town České Budějovice (in German Budweis). That's why in some territories the Czech Budweiser is called Budvar to differentiate it from the American beer. Meanwhile if you visit Czech Republic (and a few more countries), if you order Budweiser you'll get Czech made #Budweiser. If you try to order American Budweiser, you'll probably get a nasty look because American Budweiser tastes like piss.

    Czechs really like their beer.

Note: Budvar is shortened name of the Budweiser Budvar brewery. That's where the name Budvar comes to the play when ordering beer.

  2. The word dollar has #Czech origin. It comes from German Tahler. After one Bohemian (Kingdom of Bohemia was a Czech kingdom) town started minting their own coins, the coins were called Joachimsthaler (Joachimsthal's or of Joachimsthal - the name of the town). That got shortened to Thaler and eventually in Czech language that got transformed to tolar. The English word dollar comes from the Czech word tolar.

German adjective becoming a noun used in other languages is more common than you think. The type of beer Pilsner comes from Czech town Pilsen (Pilsner - Pilsen's or less literally "from Pilsen"). Famously Pilsner Urquell is beer made in Plzeň (Czech name for Pilsen). So when you order a pilsner style beer, you are ordering "Plzeň's". That's also why "Berliner Pilsner" annoys me so much, they mean it's Berlin's pilsner, but literally it just means "Berlin's Plzeň's" which doesn't make sense on its own.

So Czechs have given us more than just the word robot. We can thank them for names for currencies and also beer brewing style.
