  1. @joxean search in GitHub is better than it was (no bonus points, it is closed source SaaS).

The new code search does regex, and then the code viewer lets you navigate by symbols found with TreeSitter.

What was good about Google’s code search, and what kind of features are you looking for?

  4. :github: is looking for projects to try out the upcoming Swift support in code scanning.

    Sign up here:

You’ll be able to get access to the new CodeQL-powered static source code analysis before it ships to everyone else.

  5. I open sourced a tool to create lists of repos to run GitHub CodeQL’s Multi-Repository Variant Analysis on, using a keyword search on GitHub.

It's a Bash script you can trigger with a VSCode build task. It uses the GitHub API (via the GitHub CLI) to fill a list in the VSCode settings.

It’s a stopgap before this sort of feature makes it into the product.

They issued an apology 🙇‍♂️ on how they communicated, and clarified 💡 what is happening.

  12. @linja for VSCode I currently use Fira Code with the ligatures on:

    github.com/tonsky/FiraCode

    It's based on Fira Mono.

I like that if I typo some coding punctuation/operator (which would usually form a ligature) it stands out; and I find that ligatures make for more readable code.

  17. @thecesrom Jythooooooooon! In my best Kirk voice.

:java: and :python: together is a great idea, but not having the Python 3 `main` branch working, and having no clear progress makes it feel like Perl 6 all over again.

They should rename their moribund Jython3 repo, that's just confusing!

It's such a shame, useful Java scripting interfaces languishing in a dying ecosystem.

There was a similar lag with things that embed CPython, but they have an escape route.

  22. You can now run a single static analysis query across thousands of repos on GitHub using CodeQL's MRVA (Multi-repo Variant Analysis).

That's great both for security research and rapidly auditing exposure to a single vuln or weakness for security teams.

It works from the CodeQL extension for VSCode, with open source public repos & private repos where CodeQL Code Scanning is enabled.

  23. CW: UK 🇬🇧 elections 🗳️

Don't forget 🤦 you will need ID 🛂 to vote in the UK 🇬🇧 local elections 🗳️ on the 4th May.

👉 If you don't have any, get it here:

No ID = No Vote 🙅

🗨️ Share this with your younger UK friends, people affected by poverty, or those from minority communities - it's them who are most affected - they are less likely to have any official ID

  24. @bug why does type information have to be in the name anyhow?

Are you using a language where IDE support for types isn't implemented?

Hungarian Notation, FWIW, would have you do:

    u2NumberOfCats

  25. @bug a u2; or an s2, if it's signed.

    A byte is a u8, a nibble :blobcatcookienom: is a u4.

    A a dword is a u32 and a qword is a u64... and so on.

Simple, unambiguous, and it even tells you whether it's signed or unsigned... but it's not cute :blobfoxboopcute:, I grant you.

I think it's unlikely to be confused with the high-altitude plane ✈️ or the rock band :blobcatcool:, given context 😁
