That involvement has continued to the present day, with current federal Liberal leader Angus Taylor regularly praising the Brethren and calling out one of the church’s charities, the Rapid Relief Team, for its work in the community.
Reflecting on John Howard’s involvement with the Brethren over the course of his political career, a spokesman for the former prime minister tells The Saturday Paper that the characterisation of him in Bachelard’s book “is like a curate’s egg – it’s good in parts”.
“Many of the economic views attributed to him only evolved over time. He has constantly said that he did not bring rigid ideologic attitudes with him into parliament,” the spokesman says.
“Mr Howard adheres strongly to the view that individual Australians or groups are free to either offer or receive help from others during the course of election campaigns – provided all conduct is within the law.”
In an opinion piece published in The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald earlier this month, former Western Australian Liberal senator Linda Reynolds revealed how in the final weeks of the campaign a senior party official asked her to meet two men described as small businesspeople wanting to help. She recognised them as Brethren members and said they were seeking confidential campaign information and individual logins to Feedback, the party’s voter-contact system, so they could phone voters from their own premises.
Reynolds refused. While she was assured the party would “turn off” its involvement with the Brethren in Western Australia, she soon saw Brethren members arrive in growing numbers at pre-poll booths, briefed by people who weren’t part of the Liberal Party’s local campaign teams, making other volunteers feel uncomfortable and at times intimidated.Recommended for you
When Reynolds raised her concerns in the party room, some colleagues accused her of religious discrimination, an attack line used repeatedly by Coalition members of the Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters as they tried to mitigate or deflect questions to Bruce and Gareth Hales and other witnesses during other public hearings.
Even though Reynolds did not allege specific misconduct, she noted that the church’s submission to the committee inquiry denied coordinating its members while acknowledging the many Brethren volunteers “clearly were” coordinated.
“So, if the church did not co-ordinate them, who did?” Reynolds wrote.According to another Liberal moderate from New South Wales, whenever the Liberal Party turns to the Brethren, it ends up backfiring.

Die Ausstellung „Subkultur-Hauptstadt Karl-Marx-Stadt" findet nicht etwa in Chemnitz statt, sondern in Leipzig. Die betrachtete Zeit endet auch brav 1990, weil man sonst mit den Menschen zusammenarbeiten müsste, die die letzten 30 Jahre geprägt haben, und das wollen wir nicht. Mit denen redet man nicht.Stimmen tut es trotzdem. Es ist eine ganz eigene Kultur, die bis heute fortbesteht. Wahrscheinlich deshalb, weil man immer die Position des Underdogs hat. Die Kulturhauptstadt Chemnitz 2025 war nicht zuletzt angetreten, explizit der autodidaktischen künstlerischen Selbstermächtigung Raum zu geben, die in der Stadt ohne Kunstschule-Tradition eine wesentliche Rolle spielte und zum herausragenden Sonderstatus innerhalb des alternativen Kunst- und Subkultur-Spektrums der späten DDR führte. Von Ansätzen abgesehen kam die außergewöhnliche Karl-Marx-Städter Szene der 1980er Jahre aber nicht in den Fokus, was nicht zuletzt auch eine internationale Würdigung hätte sein können.
„Subkulturhauptstadt Karl-Marx-Stadt“ als Projekt in einer Kooperation des Leipziger Soziokulturellen Zentrums naTo e.V. und der Publikations- und Präsentationsplattform Zonic greift diese Fehlstelle leicht zugespitzt auf und setzt von einer relativen Außenposition zur ergänzenden Korrektur an.
Es fußt dabei auf diversen Vorgänger-Projekten zur Subkultur des realsozialistischen Raums und entsprechenden Veröffentlichungen, in denen auch der spezielle Charakter der Karl-Marx-Städter Szene vorgestellt wurde. Aus diesen Kontexten ergibt sich auch die maßgebliche Zusammenarbeit mit Dr. Claus Löser, der als Ko-Kurator aus den originalen Zusammenhängen stammt. Er gründete Anfang der 1980er mit dem späteren Künstler Florian Merkel die Artpunk-Band Die Gehirne, gab zwischen 1983 und 1985 mit Frank Bretschneider das originalgrafische Samisdat-Magazin A Drei heraus und veröffentlichte Texte in anderen DDR-Samisdat-Publikationen. Hauptgrund seiner Verfolgung durch die Staatssicherheit war jedoch seine Rolle als wesentlicher Akteur der vor allem mit Super8-Technik arbeitenden Experimentalfilm-Szene, zu deren wichtigstem Archivar und wissenschaftlichem Aufbereiter er später wurde.
Die Wortwahl von der „Subkulturhauptstadt Karl-Marx-Stadt“ bezieht sich aber auch wertend auf die Vielzahl außergewöhnlicher künstlerisch-subkultureller Aktivitäten, deren Bandbreite vor allem mittels der Ausstellung erfahrbar wird, während in einer Veranstaltungsreihe spezifische Momente kontextualisiert werden. Keine andere Stadt der DDR hatte eine ähnlich schräge Verschränkung von Klang, Poesie, Experimentalfilm, Kunst und performativer Aufführung aufzuweisen. Dass es auch schon eine Eigenwahrnehmung dieses Sonder-Charakters gab, drückte sich z.B. in den Kassetten-Beilagen des Magazins A Drei „Melodie & Harmonie“ und „Klar vor mir Musik“ aus, die den Sound der Stadt einfingen. Ein Novum der Selbstbehauptung der Hauptstadt eines Randbezirks. Deren politische wie kulturpolitische Wirkungsbedingungen in den 1980ern ebenfalls vorgestellt wird, von der staatlichen Repression Anfang der 1980er, vor allem von Punk, bis zur vorsichtig geweiteten, wenn auch weiter überwachten Spielwiese am Ende des Jahrzehnts bzw. des gesellschaftlichen Systems.

Dimanche 25 octobre, à marée basse, Les Écologistes du Pays de Saint-Malo étaient sur la plage du Sillon à Saint-Malo pour dénoncer le manque d'eau sur le territoire. 💧
