2. If sales were disappointing across multiple records, the label could either drop the band or keep them under contract, unable to record anything until contract was up. Failure rate for signed bands on major labels is about 98%.
Alternatively a band could scrape together their own studio money, release their own CD and sell it out of the trunk of their car at their gigs. Punk bands were really good at this.

1. Before music streaming became a thing, a musician or band would hustle for a record label contract. If they got a contract, they'd get paid an advance to go into the studio and make a record. The label would decide if the record had enough sales potential to release and promote, maybe even send the band on the road to tour behind it.
