  1. Someone told me today that OpenAI “solved math” and mathematicians are freaking out because there’s no point in doing math anymore.

    And then I saw that some mathematicians have already looked at some of those results and found new, more elegant proofs or have improved the bounds in some of the results.

    OpenAI didn’t “solve” anything. Because math is more art than it is science. It can’t be “solved.”

    It’s not the content of a theorem that excites a mathematician. It’s not even the act of solving a problem. It’s about the aesthetics of an argument, which are subjective and malleable.

    Seriously, people publish papers that re-solve existing theorems because they found a new proof that highlights an interesting technique or uses a new approach that’s more “beautiful” than the original, at least in the authors estimation.

    All OpenAI did was dump a bunch of ugly solutions to problems a bunch of people care about. And all that’s going to do is motivate people to do a whole lot more math.
