  1. Full time... excellent. A timeless classic that is just as important now as when it was written.

  2. Half time and it's bloody brilliant!

  3. Off to the theatre tonight to see "Twelve Angry Men." I love the film and have always thought it would be great on stage...so let's find out!

  4. I do think that it's about time we had a new transfer of Black Narcissus; the 2010 Criterion Blu Ray is showing it's age. The restoration is gorgeous and very detailed, but the colour flickering is very easily fixable nowadays.

  5. Oh dear...I seem to be falling back into that trap of reading books that are famous films again, even if I haven't seen the film.

Most of the books I've read this year have nothing to do with films, honest. I guess I just post about the film related ones here because I know my audience 🤣

  6. In other reading news; last week I finished reading "Black Narcissus" by Rumer Godden.

I'm so glad that I was finally able to track down a copy of this one. It was a great read. I've been a fan of the brilliant Powell & Pressburger film for many years, and it was interesting to finally read the book and then revisit the film.

While reading the book I was thinking that the film was a fairly straight adaptation, but then watching the film again it was interested to see all the little changes. I thought it was particularly interesting that in many places they toned down the sexual overtones in the film, but in other places they ramped the sensuality up way past 11 compared to the book.

And I guess after calling out early Stephen King I can't not mention that of course a British novel/film from the 30s/40s set in India is of course going to have it's problematic moments.

  7. Now that spooky season has descended upon us again I decided it was time to pick up this Stephen King omnibus I picked up in a charity shop ages ago and finally read the next story; Carrie.

I read The Shining last Halloween and while I enjoyed it I certainly felt like it outstayed it's welcome.

Carrie on the other hand is a much shorter and pacier read with a great sense of momentum and building pressure. I've never seen any of the film adaptations but might have to check one out.

Some of the language is certainly dated and problematic, casual racism and a few instances where Mr. King is guilty of writing female characters "titting down the stairs", but given how generally awesome he's been during America's descent into fascism I'm happy to file those instances of questionable writing down to novel being over 50 years old. "Different times" rather than problematic opinions.

Will probably also read Misery this season, but might switch to another author in between.
