Is the domain you want really taken? We checked 3,000 names against the registries' own servers on 5-6 October.
All 1,000 of the most common English words are registered as .com, .net and .org. Random two-word names differ: 39% of the .coms were registered, about half of those showed a for-sale page (median ask $3,592), and 99.7% of the taken ones had a free match in another extension.
