Sea ice extent in the Chukchi (northwest of Alaska) is way above the 1991-2020 median in NSIDC data and is the highest for the first week in October since 2001. Sea ice also increasing in the Beaufort Sea (north of Alaska) but was higher at this point in the season in both 2021 and 2022. @Climatologist49 @ZLabe

Sea surface temperatures around Alaska for the week ending October 2 feature water warmer the normal in the open Gulf of Alaska but near normal near the coast. Western and northern Bering Sea warm but southeast Bering remains cool. Mostly below normal north of the Bering Strait although above normal near the Alaskan coast.
