@fbaum The first handcycle we saw in Monterey County was in 2010 or 2011, when we met Ed biking on the Monterey Bay Sanctuary Scenic Trail's City of Monterey section.

I am having a Black identity politics problem today.
A couple of months ago, I took issue with a hideously, absurdly racist depiction of Stacey Abrams that had been reposted in condemnation by the eminent Black writer Michael Harriot.
The cartoon had been produced by Tariq Nasheed, a Black activist and the purported leader of the #FBA "Foundational Black Americans" group, which seeks reparations ... and is fiercely anti-Black immigrant. The group spends about half of its time attacking African Americans who are either immigrants from Africa or descended from post-Civil War African immigrants, or are biracial.
I happen to be the biracial child of a Nigerian immigrant, and married to a white woman.
The term "tether" was new to me, as I suspect it is to anyone who isn't in the FBA cult. The whole group reeks of the same ethnocentric hostility I see on the far right - and indeed, the two groups tend to make common cause attacking mainstream leftwing political groups. (A "tether" to the cult is an American-born child of an immigrant who gives that immigrant standing for naturalization.)
I tend to draw as much hate from white nationalists as the Black fringe. What's new is the persistence and the personal nature of the attacks. Of late, they've been reposting images of my bruised, beaten face after I was attacked by militants who took issue with my reporting during the 2020 protests. Those were the guys who went on to murder Secoriea Turner a week later.
The object lesson there - that I'm willing to bleed in the course of reporting a story and cannot be intimidated - appears lost to them, unless they think this is somehow threatening or discrediting.

For those trying to weigh statements for their truth value, I would simply note that my detractors are anonymous and unaccountable for their statements. I am not.
There's a meaningful discussion to be had about what reparations - for slavery, and for segregation, and for American discrimination writ large - might look like. That discussion isn't going to happen in a productive way while unserious, abusive bigots claim to speak for any meaningful segment of the Black public.
And really ... they don't.
I would argue that most Black people - and yes, I mean most Black Americans who trace their ancestry to American slavery - would not want someone like Tariq Nasheed speaking for them.
The starting place for any movement toward reparations has to be fundamentally distinct from the rhetoric of white nationalism. I'm not making a moral judgment there. I'm making a political judgement: there is no political majority that excludes white racists, white antiracists, Black antiracists and immigrants. You can't win anything with what's left.
