I recently had the opportunity to present at the Melbourne #ML and #AI Meetup on the topic of the #TokenWars - the resource conflict over data being harvested to train AI models like #LLMs - and the alateral damage this conflict is causing to the open web.

This afternoon I bumped into Di Carter in the Port Hills of Ōtautahi-Christchurch, #NZ. Di's a ranger for the City Council.
Di was on Harry Ell track with a handsaw and herbicide, looking for weeds recently reported on #iNaturalistNZ. She was killing evergreen buckthorn and tree lomatia, two woody weeds iNatNZ has documented spreading into Victoria Park.
It's a good reason to report weeds publicly on #iNaturalist.

Yo solo recomendaría Superestar a las personas que disfrutaron con Inland Empire. Por suerte, yo no hago recomendaciones, tan solo hablo de lo mío, desde mí hacia quienes quieran recogerlo.
La serie de Costafreda y Vigalondo está llena de magia y, aunque a veces se ve el truco o, peor, se pueden hacer pesados (capi 5), el espectáculo es de nota. Porque se basa en la magia, en la forma primando sobre el fondo pero sin abandonarlo nunca. Esto no es una bio ni un reportaje: Aquí se hace ficción, podría rezar el cartelito que no me consta que haya estado colgado en los sets.
Serie del año. Serie de culto.
El misterio empieza con una excelsa Rocío Ibáñez echando un polvo interdimensional, cuya consecuencia será parir a la niña de sus ojos. Esto se rubrica en una escena llena de ternura sin recurrir a artificios sentimentaloides. Escena mayúscula. Desde ahí, la madre -superpoderosa- pegada a la hija, esa niña a la que la ventana que cambia de paisajes por diapositivas pronto se le queda chica.
La serie muestra con brillantez cómo la insistencia, el apoyo familiar y conocer a la gente adecuada (muchas comillas), es imprescindible para llegar a alguna parte. El talento en sí mismo es insuficiente. Se ve entre canciones arregladas ad hoc y un torrente de cameos.
Va a su favor dosificar la aparición de la prota en los primeros episodios, dando un arco de redención a los adláteres. Sobre todo a un Leonardo Dantés ("Donde está la rima, está lo verdadero") encarnado por un Secun de la Rosa notable que nos regala más pichas en pantalla de las que hay en todo Netflix juntas.
Un repaso particular que ofrece una reflexión general sobre redescubrirse, entenderse, conversar consigo misma para hallar tu lugar. Dejar ir lastres pero habiéndolos asimilado, desde la madurez. ¡Y no tomarse tan en serio como siempre hizo Tamara!

Abstract: In recent years, there has been an explosion in generative AI. Most of us are now familiar with tools like ChatGPT, Midjourney, Sora, and others. At the heart of generative AI is a machine learning architecture called the "transformer", which is fed by huge datasets - text, images and videos. Those datasets are "tokenised" - cut up into chunks which the transformer can ingest. Those actors who can obtain the most tokens can generally train the best models (for various values of "best").
We are now witnessing a battle between the creators of generative AI models - who seek to obtain as much data as possible for tokenisation - while their targets try to stop them. The social ramifications of this resource conflict are widespread, resulting in "alateral damage" - a term I am coining to point to the unforeseen, unintended, distal consequences of a seemingly innocuous technology.
These are the Token Wars.
And they're the reason not all our content should be openly available.
In this three-part talk, I first provide a technical grounding on transformers, tokens and how they're used to build text-based generative AI. In the second part, I draw on economics to ask, "why are tokens so valuable?", showing that as the internet becomes filled with AI slop, human-created data is becoming more scarce - and so more expensive. In the third part I explore how you might approach guarding your token treasure, from data poisoning to alternative licensing models and data sovereignty.
You'll leave this talk never looking at data or ChatGPT the same way again.
