Constructed in 1945, no-one is quite sure who commissioned the Kyūtei Omuro (旧邸御室) or what purpose it served.
The sukiya-style (数寄屋造り) mansion sits in a sprawling 1655m2 parcel of land, and given its proximity to Ninna-ji (仁和寺) many believe there was some sort of connection.

Cherry blossoms are known for their delicate white and pink petals, but there are a handful of sakura trees that show off surprisingly different colours.
Ninna-ji (仁和寺) and Hirano-jinja (平野神社) are good places to catch these unusual varieties of sakura.

Ninna-ji (仁和寺) has a unique type of omikuji, with the sacred lots concealed in clay blossoms (available all year).
Reaching their peak around April 20th, the temple's sakura are the last to bloom in Kyōto. Known as Omuro-zakura (御室桜), the trees are uniquely stunted.

Let's start at the road's southern end.
Ninna-ji (仁和寺) was founded in 888 by Emperor Uda (宇多天皇), and for most of its life head priests were drawn from the imperial family.

Just beside our Camellia Garden Teahouse runs Kinukake-no-michi (きぬかけの路 the 'Silk-draped Path'), a 2km stretch of road that joins the UNESCO World Heritage sites of Kinkaku-ji (金閣寺 The Golden Pavilion), Ryōan-ji (龍安寺) and Ninnai-ji (仁和寺).
