for anybody ever thinking about taking the short way and installing third-party user software like #ZITADEL instead of your own

a word of warning:

I'm considering abandoning #KeyCloak in favor of #Zitadel for #IAM. It's a tiny #Kubernetes based setup, and #KeyCloak seems like a massive GUI-first Java behemoth, which is pretty far from my personal preference - something that's light weight, declarative, cloud-native and preferably written in a modern language like Go.

My requirements are:

• Open source
• Self-hosted
• Supports MFA (including YubiKeys)
• Supports social logins (FB, GH, Google etc.)
• Supports simple user groups

Any thoughts or tips?

It has been a super exciting 2025 for me working for #zitadel . I started delving deep inito #opensource software, talking with the #OSS community and improving the product through their feedback.

We faced some challenges but also improved a lot. But I believe this is only normal for a such a small group of people.

I am looking forward to this 2026 roadmap!

So, I have been using Zitadel as my IDP so far, but it’s far too clunky and slow to my taste
I’ve been thinking about moving to Authentik, but now I see this project, PocketID, and I’m starting to think it would do the job at hand very easily

Only this is it’s only supporting passkeys, but I guess Bitwarden will take care of that

Convince me not to use PocketID, how has the experience been with this around here ?

Damn, the only SSO I've ever actively used/deployed myself is #Zitadel (tho I did try out #Authentik and researched #Keycloak);

Tho the first one wasn't really user-friendly at the time and the second one (I believe) still doesn't even support #WebAuthn :neocat_woozy:

Edit: it apparently has support for that now :3

Well scratch that #Zitadel upgrade. I thought I was using a versioned tag in my #DockerCompose file but I'm actually using latest. As such I've been running 4.x since it was released! :nkoHypers:

Thought I'd try checking out #Zitadel using their #Docker example (https://zitadel.com/docs/self-hosting/deploy/compose)

Sadly, it simply doesn't work. Context errors, not being able to get a session. 😞

I've been progressively more and more frustrated with Zitadel as Identity Provider in the last months

It came with the default Netbird installation process and thought I would use Zitadel as my Identity Provider for the whole infrastructure, learning with it

But it feels clunky, slow and overly complicated, so I am here to ask you, is it a me thing or is Zitadel actually not so polished ?

I am currently eying Authentik and have to run some tests before migrating but I would be curious to hear your feedback on the matter

Couldn't sleep so I worked on my #ZITADEL deployment. I think I finally have it where I want it! Now I just need to create a new #tailnet using it as my custom OIDC 🤓

@bcremer @ocramius I always wanted to try Zitadel in a production setup. So far I only have been playing around and reading the docs and it felt so much better than Keycloak. Got any experience with that already?

looks like i could use #zitadel on auth.tchncs to easily assign a login to a user if i don't want to make it publicly available (such as the nextcloud) ... neat.
didn't see how to do it in keycloak yet (but i didn't really try either – however, here it looks obvious)

another problem:
i wanted to reuse the username for apps like writefreely, but it can only be set on registration when the org domain is added to the username. otherwise a user would need to modify it manually because #zitadel then would use the mailaddress as username by default.

edit: not sure if thats a bug, but after updating zitadel, hiding the suffix from appearance instead, it looks like it then also stores without the suffix

hm. appears that #zitadel as of right now allows for editing usernames... and doesn't provide a way for disabling that yet. sounds like a (potential) problem...

alrighty, a #zitadel testinstance is now alive... maybe gonna test it with writefreely
