Cutting out linen for a new shirt today, I started having science-fictional thoughts about the future of low-waste one-off sewing (home sewing, bespoke, etc). I say “science-fictional”, but most of this technology already exists.
What if we could do this:
- I browse a lookbook online, and choose my fabric (maybe via a step where I send off for samples, or view a physical lookbook at my local library or fabric shop or maker space, or perhaps it’s fabric I’ve used previously so I know I like it)
- I go to the fabric-maker’s website, upload SVG files of my pattern pieces with marked grainlines (maybe even marked pattern-match lines), and pay a service+shipping fee plus the retail price for the minimum length of fabric that would be required to cut just those pieces (this is going to be more than the length that is actually used, due to the next step, but I think the buyer needs to commit at this stage in order to make it feasible)
- the fabric-maker merges my SVG shapes with other people’s SVG shapes to create the optimal layout that wastes the least fabric
- fabric shapes are laser-cut, sorted out, then mailed to their recipients along with some of the inevitable offcuts to use for mending in the future
- I sew my shapes together and have clothing
Probably a pipe dream, but I’ve been trying to think of alternatives to “traditional” zero-waste sewing since I’m not super-keen on loose boxy clothes.

I had planned another #sewing project for this week, too, now having doubts on my time management skills 😅
Moving took all energy from last 2 months and after this week it's gonna be almost a month before I have time for sewing again. -
Being an absolute sewing tornado today and shortened two second hand dresses into tops and FINALLY made buttonholes for my zero-waste gather dress that's been waiting for them since..... January? Longer? I don't even know.
Oh and also sent a job application I've been working on all weekend. 100% won't even get an interview but it's good to practice.
(That's Oona in the background, she's hungry and is not shy about letting me know.)

Someone donated some amaaaazing wax prints to the Lair and I could not go past this 5m length so I spent my last $30 on it (cheap tho!!!) because I thought it'd be perfect for my Frocktails dress.
I spent a week hemming (pun lol) and hawing over what pattern to use but ultimately decided on Birgitta Helmersson's zero waste tier dress because it goes with the whole textile waste hill I am gonna die on. Though technically I'll have fabric left, I think the dress will only have used up 3m and what's left is a whole intact piece.
Yes, I have cut into the large flower motif butttt I think it'll look more interesting. I'm doing view D which is a maxi length with a second tier.

Zero waste linnen shirtje
Al maanden lag een restje blauw linnen van een krappe meter me aan te staren. Te groot om op te knippen voor een patchwork-project, te klein om echt een patroon mee te maken. Ik wilde er een zomers shirtje van maken, niet te ingewikkeld, maar ook weer niet gewoon een boxy twee-rechthoeken-op-elkaar ding. En ik wilde ook nog wat overhouden om wel in een patchwork-ding te kunnen verwerken.

I had a massive ding dong moment and forgot to double the body width. Hahahahahhaha. I took the project to my computer so I could move the little modules around freely since I needed to completely rejig the layout.
So all the planning is done, now I just need to transfer the markings to my fabric. But first, Lucy requires attention and I require dinner.
