  1. Not by accident, TIL that "wayward" is the shortened form of "awayward."

    The existence of:
    downward
    toward
    forward
    backward
awkward (etym: Old Norse meaning backward!)
    froward
    upward
    eastward, northward, southward, westward
    inward
    outward
    ETC.

    ...implies the validity of:

    nextward
    withward
    fromward
    intoward
    againward
    besideward
    aboonward
    aloofward
    yondward
    whitherward
    nighward
    ETC.

  2. @mo

So would it be reasonable to infer that "Hólm" is basically "island"?

I'm thinking of local-ish to me in the Bristol Channel, where we have the Welsh islands of "Flat Holm" and "Steep Holm", so they'd literally be 'flat island' and 'steep island', which are nicely descriptive, and make perfect sense!

  3. I'm glad to see my Corsi-Rosenthal vs Creutzfeldt-Jakob box joke yesterday is making the rounds.

When I thought up just that similarity in words I laughed out loud by myself for about five minutes before composing the toot. The Dunning Kruger addition was just icing at that point.
