Wind Cave Canyon Trail Closed for Repair and Improvement

Wind Cave Canyon Trail is closed so that the trail and adjoining road can be repaired from frequent washouts. Sixteen low water crossings will be hardened and the road resurfaced. The trail could be closed for several weeks. This closure does not affect any cave tours.

High Speed Wind Event Closures

During the early morning hours of December 18, Western South Dakota experienced an extreme wind event with gusts over 90 mph. The Wind Cave Visitor Center, park roads, the Elk Mountain Campground, and the Prairie Vista and Wind Cave Canyon Trails are open. UPDATE 12/20: The Visitor Center has reopened. All other trails are closed for hazard removal.

Tree Thinning Project Will Cause Short Delays Starting August 25, 2025

Expect one-way traffic with short delays along Highways 87 and 385 while contractors thin pine saplings to improve visibility and safety along roadways. Project begins along Highway 385 on Monday, August 25, and moves to Highway 87 a few days later.
