A good read from @pluralistic for #WebComms and #WritingOnTheWeb students (and others) on the topic of the Wikipedia in the main: https://pluralistic.net/2025/09/05/be-the-first-person/ not least for the link to Molly White on a useful and non-trivial way to contribute to the platform.

Raptitude (David Cain) on surfing the web in 2025: https://www.raptitude.com/2025/06/how-to-surf-the-web-in-2025-and-why-you-should/ might be interesting in general and for #WebComms students

My new online home doesn’t have the type of infrastructure discussed here, but I can see why it might be helpful and was clearly an important part of the past web #WebComms #WritingOnTheWeb https://thehistoryoftheweb.com/our-online-homes-need-infastructure/

Many people here know already, but in particular for #WebComms and #WritingOnTheWeb students… try an RSS reader! It’s how I read https://pluralistic.net/2024/10/16/keep-it-really-simple-stupid/ on the benefits of RSS. It’s how I read almost everything these days.

This is a great example of a #Wikipedia #Editathon for #WebComms students https://cybernetics.anu.edu.au/news/2024/10/08/8-Ways-We're-Celebrating-Ada-Lovelace-Day/

It's my last two lectures at Curtin next week. Ever. I have just guilted my select #WebComms audience from today into being there next week with the promise of robots... which means I need to get those robots working. I will also bring candy for anyone else who is interested and sees this post.

Between the two units I teach, #WebComms and #WritingOnTheWeb, I talk about most of these things, so all my students might like this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TfUBuIZkmQ

Oh dear. But also how well timed for Your Digital Shadow week in #WebComms: Welcome to Meta’s future, where everyone wears cameras https://www.theverge.com/2024/9/28/24256310/meta-ray-bans-cameras-future-connect

I often tell #WebComms and #WritingOnTheWeb students that reading their assignments aloud is the only way to proof read, but here is a longer piece on the benefits: https://www.raptitude.com/2024/09/in-favor-of-reading-aloud/

This article is helpful for #WebComms students in a few ways:
[1] Demonstrates how easy it is to think of the Internet and Web as being the same things...
[2] ...But does so in a way that positions the Web as the way people "see" the Internet (which is fair tbh)
[3] Complements the Wayback Machine activity for Topic 1.2 ... and what is the Web?

Setting up #WebComms for Semester 2, 2024... not as behind as I was for Semester 1 at a similar point, so I guess I should feel ok!? Will be welcoming students to the unit properly next week (with the first lecture on Tuesday 23 July at 1pm).

RIP Doge a story that gives a sense of how the web and its memes has changed #WebComms https://www.newyorker.com/culture/infinite-scroll/what-doge-taught-me-about-the-internet

This article explains options to Google search without AI (which is proving unhelpful to many): https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/google-searchs-udm14-trick-lets-you-kill-ai-search-for-good/ (thought #WebComms people might want this info in detail)

Vector is charging and getting ready for the final #WebComms tutorial this semester
-
Also, I just noticed that someone in the #WebComms class put chocolate into the snacks box (as opposed to just taking snacks out)... Wow!
-
The #WebComms classes for Semester 1 are complete. This was one of the most enjoyable semesters I have ever had - probably the most enjoyable since I became a permanent member of the lecturing staff. My students were great, in lectures and tutorials. Thank you. I hope people studying online and listening to lectures can sense we were having a good time!

#WebComms marking with a rather dysfunctional Vector on the desk isn’t that easy, but I’m trying to test the robot for next week!
-
It worked… because the #WebComms A1 marking is now done for Semester one!

The elders may not know me, but I know them… #WebComms #marking #Assignment1

There are two essential readings this week #WebComms people… I guess I should email you a reminder too. It would be great if you read them before we get to discuss stuff this week.

Providing snacks for students means… snacks for me, late in the day when I ended up skipping a proper lunch #WebComms

Even I wasn't aware of the extent of undersea cabling for the internet until I read this, so I think #WebComms students will be interested (and I'll talk more about this in future iterations of the unit): https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-03-06/the-cloud-under-the-sea/103137378

@smolrobots Namebot is just what I need today to assist me in my second #WebComms tutorial!

Let’s remember this when we get around to talking about blogs and blogging #WebComms people: https://jamesg.blog/2024/02/29/blogging-medium-incomplete-stories/?utm_source=werd.io&utm_campaign=mastodon&utm_channel=mastodon

Nice mug. Of course, they don’t, but tbh for #WebComms it’s more important that I know who they were/are. Preparations for “What is the Internet?” week are in progress.
