Meine #Synology #DS ist nun zehn Jahre und drei Tage alt. Da wird es dann wohl mal Zeit für was Neues. Hat jemand Erfahrungen und Tipps? Ich suche etwas, mit dem man sich nicht abhängig macht. Also nichts, was ständig nach Hause (#China / #USA …) telefoniert. Ich hab mir auch schon überlegt selber ein #NAS zu bauen auf #Debian Basis. Aber da fehlt mir die Erfahrung mit energiesparender, leiser Hardware. Meine beiden vorhandenen relativ neuen acht TB #WD Red möchte ich natürlich weiter verwenden.

#WesternDigital announced it has created a large-scale #harddisk drive recycling program in concert with #Microsoft and recycling-industry partners #CMR (Critical Materials Recycling) and #PedalPoint Recycling. The new process reclaims Rare Earth Oxides (REO) containing dysprosium, neodymium, and praseodymium from hard drives, along with aluminum, steel, gold, palladium, and copper.

Однажды к нам обратился клиент с проблемой: имеется 2 HDD с производительностью записи 250 MБ/с. Из них делается хранилище RAID 0. Начинаем записывать трафик, скорость — 350 MБ/с. Он успешно пишется, но через некоторое время утилизация дисков подходит к 100% и начинаются потери при записи. Вывод клиента: проблема в PT NAD, так как диски должны все успевать. Думаю, многие уже догадываются, в чем соль. У нас тоже имелись догадки, но тем не менее мы решили их проверить. Из этой проблемы и родилось небольшое исследование по записи трафика в хранилище. CW: Tech/Linux mumble (no not the software)
I have this external Western Digital 4TB harddisk that is since a few days malfunctioning. fsck.ext4 -f gives thousands of bad blocks. This is the second time a #WD harddisk fails for me in the last decade. So that brand is now officially cancelled. I almost never had problems with internal drives, so I don't understand why those external drives are so unreliable. They almost never leave their place (using it for my Raspberry Pi).
I rather buy a #SDD, but 4TB external SDD's are very expensive.
Anyway, I want to praise #testdisk! 🙏🏻 Most files can be restored, although it takes a very very long time. 😴

In China ist ein Reissack umgefallen.
Nein, eine Platte im NAS ist ausgefallen. In China ist nicht nur ein Reissack umgefallen, 1/5 Felder sind vollständig abgebrannt. Naja, irgendwie so. Ich weiss, nicht ales was hinkt ist ein Vergleich.
Ich habe ein Synology DS1517+ mit (wie der Name schon sagt) 5 Einschüben, hört bei uns auf den ungestümen Namen Lala (Satalin Deviluke).
Gekauft als DS1517 ist mal, vor ein paar Jahren, also ein paar vielen Jahren, das gesamte System über Nacht tot gewesen. Das 1517 hatte irgend einen grundlegenden Fehler. Glück im Unglück: Synology hat mir die 1517 gegen eine niegelnagelneue 1517+ getauscht.
Die Platten blieben im System.
Seitdem ist es nun schon die 4. Platte, die ausgefallen ist. Ich war immer brav (klar!!), und hab mit den gleichen Platten getauscht: WD red plus. Allerdings hab ich nun die erste Platte zum 2. Mal getauscht und das hat mir zu denken gegeben.
Platte 1: 28390 h - 3 Jahre <- 2. Mal Defekt
Platte 2: 70376 h - 8 Jahre
Platte 3: 36105 h - 4 Jahre
Platte 4: 70376 h - 8 Jahre
Platte 5: 53485 h - 6 JahreDas es von Western Digital neben der WD Red noch eine Red Plus und eine Red Pro gibt, und die alle unterschiedliche Parameter haben, ist am Namen ja offensichtlich.
Aber dass es innerhalb der Red Plus-Serie noch Unterschiede gab, ist echt blöd.
Ich bin dann mal zur WD-Seite gegangen und hab, proforma, geprüft, ob vielleicht noch Garantie ist. Soviel vorweg, im September letzten Jahres ausgelaufen. Nun ja, keine Überraschung.
Überraschender war, dass die beiden ältesten Platten bei WD über die Seriennummer gar nicht zu finden waren. Die 6-Jahre alte Platte war eine APOLLO 5400 64M SATA3 6GB/S 4.0 TB 6HD NAS und die beiden jüngsten WD RED DESKTOP 4TB EMEA.
DESKTOP???????? ***KREISCH***
Kein Wunder dass die ausfallen. Im NAS laufen die Platten 24 h am Tag. Desktöppe üblicherweise meist nur ein Drittel dieser Zeit. Aber wieso steht auf dem Gehäuse groß NAS?
Weil es eine Workload-Rate gibt. Und die geht von 150 TB/Jahr über 180 TB/Jahr bis zu 300 TB/Jahr. OK, letzteres war die Red Pro.
Offensichtlich wird alles ab 180 von WD nach außen mit NAS beschriftet, intern aber die 150er als Laptop und die 180er als Desktop. Und die 300er ist dann intern mit NAS markiert.
Die Pro läuft nebenbei auch mit 7200 Umdrehungen pro Minute, die Plus nur mit 5400. Die Pro müssten also definitiv lauter sein.
Und nun? Kurzfristig hilft alles nix. Eine 180er Plus wird nachgekauft. 3 Jahre wird die sicherlich wieder halten. Und nächstes Jahr wird wieder über eine Modernisierung des gesamten NAS nachgedacht.
Wäre dann das dritte Synology-NAS. Angefangen hat es mit dem 409+ (mit dem liebreizenden Namen Multi) und 6 TB bei 2x4 TB Platten. Acht Jahre später ging dat Mädel in Rente und Lala kam. Nun sind wieder fast 8 Jahre vergangen. Alle 8 Jahre was Neues, ist das schon nachhaltig?
Mal schauen. Viel größer als jetzt muss es gar nicht werden. Eventuell richte ich das System, wenn es 6 oder 8 Einschübe hat mit 2 Platten Redundanz ein. Aber 300 Euro x 8 Platten der Pro Serie sind 2400 Euro. Verdammt viel Holz. Dafür, dass mir meine 14TB in 5x4 TB völlig ausreichen und es sind immerhin noch 2,6 TB frei.
8x4 TB kosten 1600 Euro. Immer noch viel Schotter, dafür, dass ich Kapazitätsmäßig bei 2 Platten Redundanz nur ca. 3,6 TB gewinne... Und das NAS selbst kostet ja auch noch was...
Wieso muss ich auch alle meine DVDS und BDs auf dem Server vorhalten??????

Someone should invent a noisemaker that makes random #HardDrive sounds and what noise it makes is configurable based on a selected drive brand and type, so you could have it be #Seagate #Exos, WD Blue, #Maxtor, small laptop ones, 5.25-inch and larger ones, iPod- and Zune-sized ones, etc. This could be run on its own or connected to the hard drive indicator LED pins to make noise when a drive is accessed.

Nueva vida para esta notebook. Hp Compaq nx6320. Intel T2300 centrino duo (del año 2006) x32 bits. 1.5gb de ram DDR2. Disco hdd 80gb (se reemplazo por ssd wd green 240gb). Limpieza total.
Sistema operativo: se le instalo Q4OS (GNU/Linux) base debian 32 bits. Cómo se ve en las imágenes, 230mb de ram consume al inicio, llegando a 1gb con navegador abierto con 2 pestañas, libreoffice, vlc, entre otras apps.
