  1. In my digital history class this semester, we were originally going to do some topic modeling work with MALLET but students struggled to get it installed.

So we pivoted and a few weeks later, used #Voyant to do the modeling, then Datawrapper to play with visualization.

Was a real success, and bringing #Datawrapper into the mix really helped compensate for Voyant's limitations in terms of visualization. The students really enjoyed trying different visualizations out, even if they were a bust, and trying to make sense of what they were seeing.

Planning to type up some notes as a more formal lesson plan. If I ever get a website up and running again, I'll share it there (someday).

  6. Our first project in my "Digitizing US Countercultures" (#DigitalHistory) class is largely based around #Voyant.

In a reflection on a lab assignment last week, one student coined the verb "Voyantifying" to describe what you might have to do to get text into its interface.

VOYANTIFYING --- I am absolutely running with it.

  8. Plugging the #ExecutiveOrder on #AI into #Voyant for a quick #Wordcloud, with no edits to stopwords or other processing, is exactly as uninteresting as you might expect. Still, I was bored and I did it so you don't have to. 😀

  10. Because it was too warm today to do proper research and writing, I tinkered around a bit and assembled a Dockerfile for a containerised version of Voyant Server (a useful tool for text analysis and visualisation). You can find the Dockerfile and brief instructions how to use it at github.com/fpodschwadek/docker if you're interested.

  12. Excellent #MultilingualDH news: last month's #Voyant release included a new language detection library that should address issues like the Chinese stopword list not being reliably applied: github.com/voyanttools/VoyantS

  14. Liebe #DH-Bubble, ist #Voyant kaputt oder warum wird mir trotz Stopwort-Liste (die ich zum Teil selbst aktualisiert habe) immer noch so was ausgegeben? Ideen?

  16. Addendum to 🧵 #ResearchSupportPartnershipUiO On Monday this week, I held my guest lecture for master students of #History again, called "Digital Research Methods for Historians". I started giving this lecture in spring 2018 and have been repeating it every semester since. I usually talk about digital source material (mainly Norwegian) and show some tools, like #Mirador #IIIFViewer #Transkribus #Voyant #CATMA #Recogito #HypothesesBlog and the Norwegian National Library's API and apps.

  17. In terms of resources that defy easy solutions for preservation, I think of #Voyant. It's not even just that it's a widely used, very accessible, and beloved tool for teaching DH and publicly-engaged humanities. It's also, in some way, an embodiment of a beloved colleague who we lost too soon, and how he did DH. We've collectively written tributes, memorial lectures, put together awards, but it's more and different and harder work to try to keep Voyant alive. #DHNB2023

  19. #Looted #Art #Restitution #Texts as #Data

The #provenance research and decisions of national commissions responsible for deciding whether to restitute artworks to heirs of victims of Nazi persecution are often published as PDF files in German with no links to authority files or identifiers.

What if we translate and analyse the restitution decisions listed by the Belvedere in #Voyant-Tools?
