Yesterday in the S. Sandwich islands, nice #volcanotrack from Mt Michael seen in #sentinel2. VIS image shows solid cloud deck w/a brighter wake. NIR image shows a brighter wake .
Both images are consistent with the expected impact of volcanic aerosol onto clouds above.

Actually there was a nice #Landsat overpass .
The standard RGB shows no obvious plume coming from the #volcano at the time of the overpass, and nothing obvious in the more general view .
But when looking at the NIR composite, there is a distinctive track of brighter clouds
(#volcanotrack) which is a telltale of clouds contaminated by the volcano.This coincides with the similar picture taken by the #MODIS
sensor, which has coarser resolution. -
Volcanic activity in Mt Michael in the S. Atlantic , a rather long #volcanotrack suggests that such activity has been going on for many hours.
Nighttime image from GOES confirms the activity too.

Volcanic activity this morning in the South Atlantic from Mt Michael in the South Sandwich Islands .
Clearly, it was activr for many hours because the length of the plume (also it was clear in the IR channels of GOES).Note how the plume becomes indistinguishable from background clouds after a few 100s km (as expressed by the radius of cloud droplets retrieved)

This morning MODIS-Terra provide a nice example of #volcanotrack illustrating the Twomey effect, that is , the modification of cloud properties by aerosols provided the active volcano underneath.
Location is Saunders island in the South Atlantic.

This is a good example of a #volcanotrack , that is a visible brigthness enhancement in a water cloud due to incoming volcanic emissions from below.
When aerosols enter a cloud, they create smaller droplets which in turn reflect more light than standard unpolluted clouds. As the clouds drift away from the volcano, this brightness resembles a track like those already known for ships ("Shiptracks").
The phenomenon happens during weak volcanic activity as shown here in the South Atlantic.
