"Pagan Lovesong" erschien 1982 und ist der wohl bekannteste Song der irischen Band Virgin Prunes aus Dublin. Die Gruppe gehörte zur frühen Gothic- und Post-Punk-Szene und war für ihre eigenwilligen, oft verstörenden Auftritte bekannt. Sänger der Band war Gavin Friday, an der Gitarre spielte Dik Evans, der Bruder von The Edge von U2. Beide Bands stammen aus demselben Freundeskreis in Dublin.
Der Song lebt von einem treibenden, eingängigen Bass und dem düsteren, beschwörenden Gesang. Trotz der unheimlichen Stimmung wurde er in alternativen Clubs schnell zu einem beliebten Tanzstück.
Bei dieser Fassung handelt es sich um die "Vibeakimbo"-Version. Das ist die längere Variante von der 12-Inch-Single, die dem Stück mehr Raum gibt und in der Mitte einen ruhigeren Zwischenteil hat.

Today’s commuter soundtrack, Virgin Prunes ‘…If I Die, I Die’. This is a stunning album. My dearly departed friend Ivan leant me his copy to tape in the 1980s and I treasured it for years. Idiosyncratic, dramatic, deadly serious, punk-influenced, art rock. This isn’t an easy listen at the start, but if you like music you can’t dance to and will put in effort to appreciate music, it’s a very rewarding listen.
