Last week, I got an Ikea Vindriktning PM2.5 particle sensor, which I connected to HomeAssistant. I noticed a huge increase in PM2.5 this morning, after running an ultrasonic humidifier last night (a room away from the sensor). I had no idea those things put out show much white dust... but we have hard water here.

Enough people asked me about it, I sat down and wrote it up properly. Here's how to hack an #IKEA #Vindriktning air quality sensor using a @Raspberry_Pi Pico W and @micropython to add make it into a network connected #IoT thing. https://www.raspberrypi.com/news/hacking-ikea/

…got everything working! Wrote a quick web server in MicroPython to serve the pm25 measurements from the sensor. But not only that, the @Raspberry_Pi #PicoW fits neatly inside the #IKEA #Vindriktning, and then it all closes up cleanly. Pretty pleased with how things turned out!

If you're willing to do a tiny bit of soldering, you can add an ESP8266 or #esp32 to an Ikea #vindriktning

It's an easy mod, you only need to connect three wires between the ESP and the Vindriktning motherboard. I hadn't soldered anything in 15 years and I did it in about 10 minutes - part of why it took that long was me taking pictures for the blog post.

Sören Beye hat vor einer Weile auf GitHub eine Bauanleitung veröffentlicht, welche zeigt, wie man einen kleinen 5 Euro-#ESP8266 an die Ikea-Platine löten kann. Die passende Software hat er auch gleich dazu gepackt, sodass man die Kiste innerhalb weniger Minuten umbauen kann. Der beschriebene Lüfter-Mod war dann noch fast das beste, denn jetzt nervt das Geräusch nicht mehr.

Kosten: Ikea-Sensor 12,99 EUR, ESP8266-Board 5 EUR, Lebenszeit ca. 20 Minuten.

I have a couple I modded with #Tasmota on, and since I had one in my parts bin, one has a BME688 I put in while I had the #vindriktning opened up.

I wrote it up at https://unixorn.github.io/post/add-smarts-to-ikea-vindriktning-air-sensors/ but the hardest part was not stripping the screws in the plastic case.

Works great with #HomeAssistant and the tasmota integration.

I like the display on the vindstryka but I don't need another air sensor. Using them to house and power an ESP32 with #ESPresence is appealing though.

Just done the #ikeaHack #VINDRIKTNING with an esp8266 and #espHome and now it shows in my #homeAssistant

But I also added a #SCD41 co2, temperature, and humidity sensor.
They're kinda expensive but they are actually sensing co2 not just estimating it based on other readings. At least I hope so for the cost.

Will do a blog on it another day, not that this hack needs even more blogs!

Salvaging tiny wires (not just cells) from vapes is worth it for little jobs like this!
