  1. I've been working at cleaning the calcium buildup of the tub all day. Limescale remover spray sat on here for hours in two passes. I scrubbed the bejeezus out of it several times. I rinsed it out and used a powdered cleanser for a while. Scrubbed the bejeezus out of that, too. Then I rinsed it all out thoroughly. Ended it with a vinegar and baking soda soak for more than an hour. Believe it or not, this is progress. This is the most limescale I've been able to remove in a few years.

I'm not sure how to get the rest. I obviously can't spend hours every day scrubbing this bathtub. It always looks filthy because of the scaling, even though I do clean it regularly.

Now I'm going to enjoy the fruits of my labour with a long soak. #limescale #HardWater #calcium #bathtub #cleaning #bath

  2. Last week, I got an Ikea Vindriktning PM2.5 particle sensor, which I connected to HomeAssistant. I noticed a huge increase in PM2.5 this morning, after running an ultrasonic humidifier last night (a room away from the sensor). I had no idea those things put out show much white dust... but we have hard water here.

  3. The water in Kitchener is ridiculously hard. I clean my bathtub, but you'd never know it by looking at it. I've tried all sorts of cleaners. This is what it looks like after an hour or so soaking in hot vinegar. Several hours later, I used CLR. When that was all rinsed away, I used a powder cleaner that bartenders swear by. My tub still looks repulsive. I have no idea what to do aside from throw out the whole tub and get a new one. Seems wasteful and expensive. My tub looks like the filthy bathtubs of The Sims only without the flies. And yes, I have a water softener. #cleaning #bathtub #LimeScale #Bathroom #HardWater

  4. Domestic antiheroes, I beseech you. What is the best way to remove this buildup from around my bathroom faucet? It’s gross and I haven’t found a cleaner that will rid me of it. CLR is the best I’ve found, but it’s not enough. I’ve also tried vinegar and baking soda. The water in Kitchener is hard and full of calcium and lime scale. #CleaningTips #Help #CleaningHelp #LimeScale #HardWater

(Sorry I can't write in French...)
#SolarThermal has provided most of my hot water for 35 years. Lots of learning about #FreezeProtection at first - "drain back" required an unbearably noisy pump, "drain down" required tricky valves that failed often. And domestic water in the panels quickly clogged them with #HardWater minerals.

What works is a closed loop with antifreeze in the panels and a heat exchanger, heating a large storage tank. Domestic water passes through another exchanger in that big tank as it is used.

In my system a gas heater or a #WoodBoiler can also heat the big tank when there is no Sun. And the accumulated heat can be pumped through #Hydronic floors. All this was a huge expense at first, but divided by 35+ years (and current fuel prices) it is wonderful!
