  1. And the next day, the view from that very same train (with the baggage car) crossing the Roughe river to head back to Montréal , showing the bridge reserved for cyclists.

  2. Live from VIA Rail, it's dinner time
    booze and squash ravioli

For the first time I've ever heard of they repeated a menu option from August to September. Yes. You read it here first on the fediverse. The VIA Rail MSC certified Italian cod with polenta and ratatouille is officially repeating a second month. Thank goodness it wasn't the ginger beef.

The train attended was also amazed (I swear to gosh I am not lying here folks) and in their career never saw this happen, I've been riding over a decade and also have not seen this ever before.

  7. VIA Rail considering a station at Montréal Metropolitan Airport (CYHU), at the latter’s request.

  8. The C$4.7B is the largest investment in #ViaRail history. For the 1st time in 40 yrs Via’s 313 new passenger cars will be built entirely on #Canada 's soil. Roughly 700 #jobs across Ontario & Quebec. Ottawa figures north of C$1.6B in economic spinoff.

Here is the part that matters, the part that made America’s Rapist-in-Chief snap like a child with Dementia.

Those cars used to be built in the USA.

    Not anymore.

  9. Ok! I'm starting to save money now so I can travel in one of the luxurious cabins aboard The Canadian when the new cars will be delivered! 🤩🚆

  10. Prime Minister #Carney announces the largest investment in #VIARail ’s history to bring passenger rail car manufacturing back to Canada | Prime Minister of Canada

    pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases

  11. First question on the #VIARAIL announcement: "Can we expect service to return to Thunder Bay ? (service cut in 1989 when transcontinental was cut - The Super Continental passes on CN lines way north of Thunder Bay).

Answer from VIA chair: With added fleet we gain new flexibility.

  12. I can't criticize the #VIARAIL announcement. But...

Carney mentions steel, so they will be 1950s heavy cars.

Also, Carney mentions everything will be made in Canada when there are no builders of train parts in Canada with experience. What he should have mentioned is that Alstom will be able to leverage its European suppliers so that the project has greater chances of actually working reliably. Last train built in Canada was in early 1980s by MLW shut down by Bombardier after last LRC built

  13. Prime Minister Mark Carney has issued press released confirming the #VIARail purchase.

  14. “The federal govt will spend $4.7-billion to build and maintain more than 300 #ViaRail passenger rail cars in #Canada, using facilities in #Quebec and Thunder Bay, PM Mark Carney announced Thursday.

Mr. Carney said the move represents a shift away from importing #trains from the USA.

In July, the PM announced $1.6-billion for the production of 45 new locomotives for VIA Rail as well as a new assembly and maintenance facility in #Montreal.”

  15. Wow, huge announcement for VIA rail. Big fleet refresh, with all 313 of the new passenger cars made in Canada and European locomotives. Now if we could just fix the rail ownership and priority problem…

  16. HEADS UP !!!! #VIARAIL announcement on non-corridor fleet this Thursday.

As expected, Alstom, with no experience in such cars, will be confirmed as winner with work done at La Pocatière and Thunderbay.

    Source: La Presse

313 cars expected to be ordered. Significant.

Half of VIA original fleet came from CP which had:
    Park: 18
    Manor: 42
    Chateau: 29
    Skyline: 18
    Dining: 18
    Coach: 30
    Baggage: 18
    Total: 173

After 1989 cuts, VIA abandonned full CN fleet and part of CP's. So 313 is big.

  17. Did you know Via Rail has a fleet of British Rail Gauge train cars?

They obtained them from a failed sleeper service through the Chunnel in the 90s. I rode with them on the Montréal to Halifax rail service called The Ocean. Part of a big rail journey I took this summer across eastern Canada and Europe.

  18. All abord! The Renaissance Sleeper carries you between Halifax and Montreal on VIA Rail. The sleeper has a storied history, first being built for an overnight London-Paris train. It ended up here, and is the most British piece of rolling stock plying North America. No where else do you get such narrow side corridors!

  19. Just got in to Jasper. Pretty close to on-time even!

Had a terrible sleep but pretty much expected that. Looks smokier out than it smells at least.

  20. Takin' the midnight train (and pulling a goofy face, I don't know what happened I'm tired ok).

  21. Via Rail charging $7 fee if I want to face forward. Seems like I'm paying a penalty for suffering from (occasional) motion sickness?

No charge for the backwards facing seats...

  23. This is cool.
But a new train sitting on the siding for 4 hours to wait for a freight train when the entire journey is supposed to take 4 hours is the actual problem no one in government wants to solve.

VIA Rail remains a national embarrassment because of successive Liberal and Conservative policy. Now they’ll just be a national embarrassment with new rolling stock.

Oh and people can barely afford to take it across the country. It is mostly an embarrassing tourist fraud with spectacular views.

Ask me how I really feel. 😆 🚂
