"Gov. #JanetMills signed into law a measure that will offer more options to recycle both single-use #alkaline and #LithiumIon batteries in Maine.
"LD 474 updates the state’s current product stewardship laws to require national battery manufacturing companies to set up drop-off locations and fund a statewide take-back program so that all batteries can be safely disposed of and rare earth metals can be extracted for reuse.
"Eight other states have enacted similar laws.
"The state’s existing battery recovery program, enacted in 1991, covers only nickel-cadmium batteries. Many hardware stores, town offices and Staples stores in Maine accept some types of batteries for recycling. The nationwide Battery Network lists on its website drop-off locations in Maine.
"Improper disposal of lithium-ion batteries — commonly found in power tools, cell phone chargers and #vaping devices — has led to at least 24 fires at recycling facilities in Maine. Disposal concerns have driven up insurance rates for towns, according to the #MaineDEP.
"More than 820,000 pounds of batteries are thrown away in Maine every year, according to the Natural Resources Council of Maine [#NRCM].
" 'Holding corporate battery makers accountable for cleaning up waste will lower costs for Mainers and help curb demand for mining rare earth metals,' said Vanessa Berry, sustainable Maine program manager at the nonprofit.
"It is technically illegal in Maine to dispose of rechargeable, button cell, or lead-acid batteries in the regular trash."

Nachdem ich mich jetzt in meiner selbstverwalteten Instanz ein wenig zurecht gefunden habe, wird es wohl Zeit für ein neues #NeuHier, auch wenn ich schon ein bisschen #AltHier bin und mit der 2. oder 3. Zwitscher-Migrationswelle nach Musk ankam.
Mein derzeitiger Hauptfokus ist die #Fotografie, insbesondere die #StraßenFotografie und #UrbaneFotografie. Desweiteren interessiere ich mich für's #Mittelalter, insbesondere lagere ich gern auf entsprechenden Märkten, wenn nicht gerade Corona ist. Speziell fasziniert mich die mittlerweile vorletzte Jahrtausendwende, also mitten in der Christianisierung Nord- und Zentral-Europas. Wenn ich nicht gerade in Mittelalter-Gewandung mit meiner Kamera herumfuchtle, spiele ich leidenschaftlich #Minecraft - besonders gern Modpacks mit Freunden auf dem eigenen Server - und #CitiesSkylines oder treibe mich im Fediverse herum. Oder spiele #Tabletops und #PenNPaper
#Musiker (Bass, Gitarre, Gesang) mit langjähriger Erfahrung im #Instrumentenbau, besonders Restauration bzw Reparatur aller möglichen #Zupfinstrumente, damit verbunden auch tiefere Einblicke ins #Tischler-Handwerk, leider fehlt in den heimischen vier Wänden ein bisschen die Möglichkeit, das auszuleben und weiter zu pflegen.
Ich freue mich über angeregte Diskussionen und Austausch zu obengenannten Themen, aber auch zu #Politik, #Dampfen, #Schneidern, #LockPicking, #PsychischeErkrankungen als Betroffener und Angehöriger und noch gefühlten hunderttausend anderen Dingen.

English:
After getting settled in my new, own instance I suppose it's time for a new #NewHere #introduction. Even though I may already count as somewhat #OldHere since I arrived with the 2nd or 3rd migration wave from the bird site after it became a billionaire's living room.
My current main focus (wait for it!) is #photography (haha, see what I did there?!), in particular #StreetPhotography and #UrbanPhotography. I'm also engaged with #MedievalMarkets which I frequently attend (includes camp) unless covid decides to have its go at us.
Apart from that playing Minecraft with friends, favourably a modpack on my own server, is a passion of mine as well as Cities: Skylines, or playing tabletops or pen'n'paper.
I'm a musician (guitar, bass, vocals) with some years of experience in #luthiery, and through that also some insight in #woodworking and #cabinetmaking. Unfortunately my home isn't the most ideal of places to further tend those passions of mine.
I'll happily engage in discussions and debates about the above, as well as #politics, #vaping, #tailoring, lockpicking, #MentalHealth, and a felt additional gazillion topics.
