  1. In October in Albuquerque at , I received my @us_rse Impact Award certificate, and there's now a photo to prove it 🙂

  2. We wrote up a little bit about the great experience some of our group members had at the second annual @us_rse conference in October! 🎉 datascience.cct.arizona.edu/ne

  3. One of the coolest things we learned about at is Codefair—your personal assistant! Codefair is a GitHub app that will look through your GitHub repository and give you actionable steps to make your code more FAIR (findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable).

  4. My notes and thoughts after attending the US Research Software Engineering 2024 conference in Albuquerque, NM:

  5. Really enjoyed US-RSE'24 in ABQ! I'm glad I joined US-RSE and decided to attend the conference, despite its proximity to my PhD defense!

Thanks to Anshu Dubey from Argonne for introducing me to US-RSE, in response to a question I had about open data at AITHERM'23 (a niche workshop organized by Dr. Yoonjin Won at UC Irvine)!

I'm gradually going through my notes and following people I met at US-RSE'24, so if you get a random follow then maybe this post explains it!

  6. Another gem from the lightning talks at #usrse24

“Every name is a chance to communicate” - Jeff Soules when talking about the value of choosing variable or function names in our code

  7. I like the approach that Daniel Howard advocated on his lighting talk on mindful software development:

The software development process “can’t be perfect but it can be intentional”

  8. Come see my rapid micro talk on tech debt starting in three minutes! Main ballroom! #usrse24

  9. Slides of the first keynote of the #usrse24 conference.

RSE: where it started and where it's going

  10. Most honest slide at #usrse24

From session “Do good: strategies for leading an inclusive collaborative data science and RSE teams”

  11. We had a good discussion on specific competencies for applied mathematics research software engineers. Anything we forgot?

    #usrse24 #usrse #appliedmath #researchsoftwareengineering

  12. Brad Richardson at NERSC discussing Fortran support at the department of energy. FUN! The Fortran user network. Controversial take is that Fortran is stable and easy to deploy on different architectures #usrse24

  13. A big theme for me is the need to recognize and reward interdisciplinary work or as Reed Milewicz puts it, “encouraging strong interprofessional interests” #usrse24

  14. It is a pleasure to present @joss at the @us_rse conference 2024 in Albuquerque this evening. Please come to the poster session and learn more about JOSS.

  15. Attending the @us_rse conference this week. For sure they have the cutest swag.

    #usrse24 #usrse

  16. Novel idea - add UIX experts to research software projects. Not just better looking UI but also more aware of user needs #usrse24

  17. Lesson 4> Communities can be fragile. More here on persistent challenge of recognition of non-publication outputs. UK REF almost entirely “publications” which don't name people vital to the paper, like RSEs or librarians #usrse24

  18. Out of 400 job postings in jobs.ac.uk with a strong software focus, there were almost 200 job titles! - Simon Hettrick at #usrse24

When talking about one of the big gains of having a unified term (Research Software Engineers) for the role.

  19. Simon Hettrick on lessons learned growing RSE community - 1. Small changes can be powerful eg consistent job title #usrse24

  20. The room, breakfast, and local heroes are ready for in Albuquerque

  21. To all friends and colleagues attending from today, have a great conference! 🎉

I can only be there with you as "small print on a poster" (The Clash) this time, but perhaps next year...

(If you're interested, the poster is P14: "Better Architecture, Better Software, Better Research" and is presented by Nasir Eisty as first author).

    Have fun!

  22. Two things:
    - I successfully defended my PhD dissertation on Friday! Maybe I can finally start having a life again...
    - I'm in ABQ for US-RSE'24 ( @us_rse) and compiled this Google Maps list (46 places!) from the "What to do in ABQ" presentation by Miranda Mundt posted ~three weeks ago. Thanks Miranda for the great recommendations!

@ me if it needs edits or if you'd like to be added as editor. Looking forward to the conference!
