Finally finished the main bit of Uru (not the expansions). Lots of hints required this time.
I think the main failing (other than the controls… and the camera angles) is that they changed from "an environmental puzzle game" to a "did you remember this bit of the story that is no longer just interesting narrative but is actually vital clues".
Like… dude?! Did you expect me to remember the name of some random character who projects a message once really early on? I had NO CLUE that she was the one narrating bits of it. I thought it was some god-entity in the special spiritual room! 😐

I think there are sill some DLCs to do, but I am done with the base.The game looks quite good for its age. Some puzzles gave me a headache, though. Partially because they were hard, and partially because they were buggy. The things I had to do to be able to jump onto a rock instead of falling under the map... :flan_sad:

I played Uru: Ages Beyond Myst today. The locations are still quite cool, but some of the puzzles are giving me a headache 🥴
I used to play this game as a kid. Revisiting it was a nice experience.

It's a quiet day at work, so I took like 30 minutes and made an *extremely* naive reprojection of the Pod Age map from Uru onto a sphere using Azgaar's Fantasy Map Generator tool (https://azgaar.github.io/Fantasy-Map-Generator/).
The land masses are *roughly* correct, but the topography (biomes, rivers, etc.) is not, apart from maybe the ice cover on Dereno.

CW: The ending of Uru: Ages Beyond Myst has been bothering me for a long time now, and here's why:
Myst: The Book of Atrus all but explicitly states in its text that it takes place in Africa. There are camels; trade caravans; a city called Tadjinar, ruled over by an *exceptionally* Black man named Amanjira; huge sand dunes; Anna and her family are from Europe, and strongly implied to be British (Atrus and Sirrus also have extremely ground-down "American idea of a British accent" British accents). Lotta Colonialism/Enlightenment vibes going on.
A key event early in the book is Atrus encountering rain for the first time in his life. It's a completely alien concept to him, and his grandmother is so overjoyed at the sight of it that she dances in the downpour. She even says that it will be "many years" before another storm comes.
Uru, by contrast, *does* explicitly state in the text that it takes place in New Mexico. Now, New Mexico is a desert, yes, but the New Mexico desert is to the Sahara as a water faucet is to Niagra Falls. Eddy County gets over 3" of rain *per year*, which still isn't a lot, but it's also *way* more than anywhere in the Sahara sees.
And yet... Yeesha brags about bringing "the gift of life to the desert", and explicitly calls out Anna's behavior in the novel. "It's raining in New Mexico" just isn't actually a big flex, and it's weird that Cyan is trying to re-characterize the actual environment of New Mexico to be more like the Sahara.

But the Myst series don't stop here! :blobfoxcomputerowonotice: In fact, I'm only halfway, with three games completed and three games yet to play: Myst IV: Revelation, Uru: Complete Chronicles and Myst V: End Of Ages. I will be playing these, in that order!
Now, none of these are supported by ScummVM - in fact, Uru doesn't appear to be a point-n-click game at all! :blobfoxsurprised:
Fortunately, installing them using Lutris' automatic GOG installers worked perfectly - so thank you WINE and Lutris teams for making Linux gaming that much better! :blobfoxcheer:I got the games ready to go, but next on my list is actually TUNIC! :blobfoxhappymlem: Myst IV will follow afterwards.

I started playing the old online game #Uru (or #MystOnline) a couple days ago for the first time I nearly a decade. It was created by @cyanworlds and I was a part of the original closed beta test.
I have such amazing memories of adventures back then and after the game was cancelled Cyan made it possible for tech minded users with spare bandwidth to run our own shards. I ran one until the very end of Until Uru. Now that it’s open source, maybe I’ll do it again?

Today marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Uru: Ages Beyond Myst. It's a game that's had an incredible impact on my life, and opened countless opportunities. I pretty much got into coding and software development as a result of the community around this game.

Biorąc pod uwagę, jak #AllBlacks w kolejnych spotkaniach nabierają rozpędu i jak pozbierali się w meczu z #URU po pierwszych 20 minutach, nie oddając przeciwnikowi do końca ani jednego punktu, ich porażka w pierwszym meczu z #FRA to chyba wypadek przy pracy. W każdym razie #NZL melduje się ćwierćfinale, w którym zmierzy się z obrońcami tytułu (#RSA), albo z rewelacyjną #IRE. Szkoda, bo zaczął mi się marzyć finał #NZL vs. #IRE ;)
No i jeśli #ITA wygrają z #FRA zdobywając co najmniej cztery przyłożenia, to zacznie się robić interesująco.
