A quoi pensent les chercheurs en informatique ? Une conférence internationale décalée a tenté d'y répondre.

“When scientists ‘rack their brains’ to approach computer science differently
At a conference held at the University of Luxembourg in March, around fifty researchers gathered for three days to discuss some thirty concrete examples of ‘undone science’.”
David Larousserie (Le Monde) reporting on #UndoneCS from Luxembourg (Article in French)

Du 23 au 25 mars 2026, à l'université du Luxembourg s'est tenue la deuxième édition de #UndoneCS (Undone in Computer Science), la conférence scientifique sur les recherches qui n'ont *pas* été faites.

Luckily, #ICE73 did NOT sit there for 7 minutes (as predicted by the SBB app), but arrived in Basel SBB with a delay of only 1 or 2 minutes.
This allowed me to catch the EC 67, and so @CerstinMahlow and I can have dinner at #Tibits in Bern.
So much for my #UndoneCS trip!
-
There’s a ~13-min buffer at Basel Bad Bf for trains coming from Germany. Guess how much #ICE73 is now delayed? 14 minutes!

It seems to me that the Dutch engineer, who’s supposed to take over a cargo train in Koblenz or Duisburg, isn’t really convinced either…
And the delay has been updated to +11… And the ICE from Mannheim to Basel is announced with +5, which would be good iff we actually arrive in Mannheim with +11. Because with Deutsche Bahn, you always have to generously round up delays.
-
And of course, after leaving Saarbrücken Hbf with just +2, we’re now standing somewhere because the track is blocked by a broken down train.
The DB Navigator says “repairs on the catenary” and forecasts an arrival in Mannheim Hbf with +5, which seems to me suspiciously optimistic.

Arrived 10 minutes early in Deutsche Bahn Land.

I’m on my way back from #UndoneCS.
Since the journey to Luxembourg went so smoothly, I’ll again take the L40 bus from Luxembourg to Saarbrücken.

Thank you very much for organizing this great conference! Had a blast talking about #permacomputing #plan9 #IRC and #forth at #UndoneCS. I did miss the morning talks due to the timezone difference, but I really look forward to the recordings!
-
We have come to the end of the last day. Thank you to all the authors and participants, you are the ones who made this conference fascinating!
-
It’s a wrap! Thanks to the organizers of #UndoneCS, it was a great experience!
-
Was Plan 9 a failure? And IRC? And Forth?

"Cultivating a Historicist Sensibility through Permacomputing" by Nils Bonfils
"Overdone" computer science (AI, cloud, big data…), as opposed to Undone :-)
Basic idea of historicism: do not assume that there is just one straight line, going to more progress.
First mention of Plan 9 at the conference :-)

And… The final talk of #UndoneCS: “Cultivating a Historicist Sensibility through Permacomputing” given by Nils Bonfils.
-
Interesting point made by Damien Lacroux: the problem isn’t the absence of anticipation, but the absence of a *shared* anticipation.

Technology and the Collingridge dilemma. #UndoneCS
