For a lot of #Under1000 instances the local timeline is the whole point of their mastodon experience and the lack of one in a client app is a showstopper.

Also the local timeline has little to do with "discoverability" either it's about "community building". People who use small instances can use the local timeline to stay up to date with what is happening "in their neighbourhood" without having to manually follow or make a list/group of everyone on their instance.

@ink_slinger @keithzg I've been running this place for 2.5 years and I'm still mystified as to how my federated timeline "coalesced" out of the ether, without relays, especially during the early time I was the sole user (active or otherwise).

I think the fediverse would be even better if every instance was #under1000 or #under100 because that makes content moderation so much easier and less emotionally draining.

#introductions Hello new mastodon folks, I'm connor! I'm a college student studying computer science and TAM. Academically, I'm really interested in making programming more accessible to everyone.

(also, addendum to that #under1000 toot: we're at 700-odd users, but we've been around for a while - a lot of these are inactive, people who tried mastodon once, or moved to other instances, or alts. Really we're maybe 20 to 30 daily active users.)

In the spirit of m.s briefly breaking down: hey, we here at icosahedron.website are also #under1000 , and I've opened regs again for a bit

we're a general-purpose instance of dubious stability, with me and @dotUser for admins, and will probably never be particularly large because whenever I feel the page is responding too slowly or like, three people sign up in a single day, I panic and close registrations!

Also, we're responsible for the hacker letters. Sorry about that.
