Great start to the season! New signing international keeper f’d up 3 times to give away both goals after Lilák took the lead. Flapped at a header from a corner, played a kick-out straight to the opposition & the tame shot that came in went straight through his hands! Other new signings Heitor at CB & Amenyido up front look promising, but Markgráf did play too much football near his own goal. Hajrá Lilák!!!

Didn’t see that coming! Horváth, Matko, Krajcsovics & Ljujić with the goals and starring with Fenyő & Maier in a vibrant attacking display that could have seen double figures but for the misses. Szpari’s couple of late goals were little consolation for them. Hajrá Lilák!!!

A point each for two teams struggling in the bottom half of the table. Lilák were possibly just about the better side with some nice approach play, but failings in the final third meant they never really did enough to deserve a win. Hajrá Lilák!!!

After serious abuse from the fans last week and harsh words from the coach it was good to see the players show a bit of fight. However, as has been the case for a long time now, terrible defending cost Újpest points. On the positive side there were two very nicely worked goals scored. Hajrá Lilák!!!

Budapest, 1962. I love this image of a man hauling his cart, somewhere into the distance, on a grey, foggy, windless winter's day. It evokes old Budapest, especially the predominantly working-class District IV on the outskirts of the city where this photo was taken. It's mostly gone now, replaced by car yards and the like. That's progress, I guess. Nostalgia is a potent drug though.

Budapest, 1949. Speaking of Hungarian football, the greatest ever Hungarian player, Ferenc Puskás, scored a hat-trick of goals in Hungary’s 6-1 defeat of Austria in 1949. The game was played at Újpest on the northern edge of Budapest.
The scorer of Hungary’s only goal against Scotland at the Euros, Kevin Csoboth, plays for the Újpest club, where I imagine he is also being fêted as a hero.

Budapest, 1974. A happy whistle-blower with poor teeth :-). Actually a train conductor at the Újpest [New Pest] train station on the outskirts of the capital. We used to catch the train from there quite often but sadly, we didn’t seen many, if any, smiling conductors like this one.
