May the strong religious focus of Grimstone be a mockery of Nintendo of America's censorship of Christian imagery during the NES days?
Back in the NES days games that were localized for American audience heavily censored any overt Judaeo-Christian imagery or reference to death. Churches no longer featured crosses, the Death spell was renamed to “RUB”, and the Kill spell was renamed to “XXXX”.
UFO 50 games notably don’t really touch upon Christian stuff at all. Except one game - Grimstone. It’s a very Final Fantasy-like JRPG set in Wild West except the continent somehow ended up in Hell itself. The local religion is very Christian-like with angels and holy water and and and BIGGAN!!
Interestingly, Grimstone shares its setting with two other UFO 50 cartridges - Devilition and Rail Heist but neither game feature that much religious references except for demons in the former.
Now, it can be just a coincidence but it’s interesting to think about nonetheless.

This is a neat strategy game. Resources feel very tight in the beginning especially. I found it hard to develop an economy and I still don't have a great grasp on the best way to use each resource.
Getting to upgrade the actions (twice!) for each dinosaur does reward long term planning. You need to hold 4 castles for two turns to win. With the fog of war your options to disrupt may be limited and you have to gamble that you can win the fight. There's no direct control over your units so the battle can be finicky and it's not clear if you are winning.
Most of my wins felt the map was more favorable to my starting side. I lost the special scenario where the opponent starts with 2 castles because I was separated by mountains and couldn't bolster and army large enough and also get on the other side of them.
Neat, but janky entry to the collection.

CW: UFO 50 - Elfazar's Hat
This is a very cute top down shooter. I thought it was tough at first, but I ended up beating it unexpectedly (and got the cherry to boot!). I thought I was going to slog through levels with the infinite continues.
Neat upgrade system. Kind of a gamble to wait for the 3 match for a better upgrade instead of a 2. Losing everything on death hurts though! I mostly focused the gun and option, then held onto the healing. Bombs didn't matter and the shield are so far from you they eat a bullet and disappear right away.
Speaking of, it was nice to play a game in UFO 50 that doesn't kill you in one hit from the start. Refreshing change of pace.
The bonus game to earn extra lives has garbage controls. I died immediately in almost every attempt.
I also switched to using my pro controller and rebound a shoulder button to hold fire. It made a huge difference to react and dodge projectiles. I found the stick easier to use for the 8 way shooting than the d-pad.

It's a block pushing puzzle game! It's not terribly exciting or deep. I'm enjoying it for what it is. Having numbered blocks that can only push lesser number is something different. The different colors have some different rules too.

This game is great! I played through the campaign and it was fairly quick to learn what the units do. I also got up to 100+ rank for the cherry in one fell swoop.
The board state can get really clogged, but the fast decision making really makes this game engaging. I'd be so focused on my next move sometimes that I'd get surprised one of my units got the last hit and the battle was over.
When I have some friends over I'll have to convince them to try the 2 player mode with me. Sounds like a blast!

UFO 50 offers some of the toughest and most brutal roguelike games out there. Oh and a Walrus golfing game for good measure.
I had about a 6 month head start over my cohosts for our upcoming recording on it, and even then JUST got my first victory in Campanella 2 for the first time. Hands sweaty, adrenaline at maximum!
