In late 1860s, U.S. Army colonel John Butler Conyngham found the holotype.
In 1869 Edward Drinker Cope formally named it Macrosaurus proriger.
In 1870 Cope formally published it as Liodon proriger.
In 1872 Marsh argued that Liodon is distinct and should be called Rhinosaurus.
Later in 1872, after many name changes, Cope settled on Tylosaurus proriger. It is a whole thing.
