Thinking more about website fingerprinting, where they detect your workstation.
For example, airlines use this to slowly jack up their price, in an effort to make you panic and purchase now.

The lake is at 9,200'. Castle Peak is at 12,000'. The white limestone on the right is loose talus and gives the mountain range its name, the "white clouds". This is one of many mountains in this area that look like this. Directly south from here is the Sawtooth mountain ranges.

More on news article popups.
On Google News, when I see a publisher that abuses me with an advertisement after every sentence, or non-stop popups, the "Disable Java Script" plugin mentioned below often helps.
But what I also like to do is simply block that news source. Google prompts for the reason: I want to report "Abusive Advertising", but 'taint a choice; I can only say "Other."
If everyone blocked sites like these, their traffic would drop. Join me on my hopeless crusade.
BTW: If you are not using a Raspberry PiHole for ad-blocking, you are missing out on some really cool tech. This is a build-yourself project. See my article:

In Firefox's web-browser, I've been playing with a plug-in that can temporarily disable Java Script. It seems to work fairly well.
When you are trying to read a news article, and it is behind a paywall or 20 pop-ups, this can sometimes get past that.
Plugin: Disable JavaScript
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/disable-javascript(use: alt-shift-1 to activate, or use the pull-down menu.)
As far as news sites go, I wish there was a way to give micro-payments to these guys -- say 0.25$.
Having a hundred different paywalls cannot possibly work. There is no way anyone can manage paying all those subscriptions for a one-time news article from one publisher, that you might not ever see again. There must be a better way.
Journalist and publishers deserve to be paid for their work. But the current shit-show of web advertising is an abomination.
