The roofers are with us today. Waterblasting our tiled roof in preparation for painting. We found that this process finds a few places where water comes through so there was a frantic shifting around of furniture. Then, of course, we found the exposed floor needs a mop so suddenly I have a lot of sweeping and mopping to do. It's tiled floor everywhere (laid long ago by Mrs) so water on the floor isn't a problem. Water on various other things is, though, so we moved more stuff than we had to just in case.

We've had loads of compliments on the backsplash behind the kitchen counter. They are tiles, not bricks. They came from a family-run tile store in Toronto's east end called The Tile store. They have a much more interesting selection than the limited beige and grey tiles offered at places like HomeDepot. And, the tiles we got were cheaper than those offered by big box stores.
Going to special stores like this means supporting small Canadian businesses.
And yes we opted for a tiled counter. There is big form, straight edged tile meaning very few joins or grout marks. Doesn't stain (modern day grout is impressive and colour matched). You can put pans straight out of the oven onto the surface without burning the surface. You can get faux butcher block, marble, etc.. A fraction of the price -- tile for our entire countertop was about $250.
