A research collaboration has developed a novel fabrication technique for producing high-performance #spectral #filters in the #terahertz region. The team achieved an entire octave-wide bandwidth filter with superior attenuation (40–50 dB) in the stopband region! This is a great leap forward in #THz filter technology. So nice to see that hard work pays off. Hard work by PhD student Lorenzo Cruciani, PhD student in my group at ARCNL, that is. He observed emission of terahertz pulses after excitation with femtosecond laser pulses from the metal ruthenium, and an surprising enhancement of the emission amplitude at higher pumping powers. Turns out that this coincides with the partial, laser-induced oxidation at higher laser powers. You can read about it here:
