  1. Trouble At The Henhouse

The Hip's 5th turns 30 today ... their first album released in Canada and the USA at the same time. The album's lead single -- "Ahead By A Century" -- became one of the most beloved in Canuk history. It features some of the best Gord Downie lyrics -- childhood and innocence that still resonates today. The album was huge in Canada and swept the Juno Awards in '97. #thetragicallyhip #troubleatthehenhouse #90smusic #music #musicsky #musiciansky

  2. More songs that got me obsessed with alt-rock way back when. Elastica, The Tragically Hip...that kind of sound. Get your mind ready for an hour long auditory flashback. Listen at the Mixcloud link.

I haven't listened to this album in probably more than 25 years. Waves of #nostalgia
This album was on heavy rotation for me in grade 12 after it was released during the fall of 1994.

  4. Gordon

In the realm of music, Gordie Tapp was the first Canadian Gordon who made it big. He was in the country field. Indeed, he was a regular on the country show, Hee Haw. He only had a couple hits because he was more of an entertainer, emcee, broadcaster and writer.

Gordon Lightfoot is the most famous Canadian Gordon musician. With mega hits like Sundown and If You Could Read My Mind, Lightfoot was known world wide and had a huge fan base. Was he folk, country, or rock? No one could really tell but he didn’t need to say, he was just a singer/songwriter that wheedled his way into the hearts and minds of many people.

Gord Deppe is the main songwriter and singer/guitarist for the Canadian rock band The Spoons. They had the hits Nova Heart, Romantic Traffic and Those Old Emotions. He’s also been known to play guitar for Flock of Seagulls.

Gord Downie was the lead singer and lyricist for the Canadian rock band The Tragically Hip. He led the band through most of their existence and even put out some of his own solo work. He died tragically in 2017 of terminal brain cancer.

Probably all you non Canadians figure that there must be a lot of Canadian Gordons since so many are successful musicians. But that’s just not true. I’ve lived my whole 57 years in Canada and have just personally known 1 Gordon. He was a teacher of mine.

So this famous Canadian musician thing that the Gordons have is a statistical anomaly.

In the very early nineties, the Canadian rock band the Bare Naked Ladies seemed to be doing everything right. Their shock name got the attention of nearly everyone, they had two lead singers and had an album’s worth of songs including 4 or 5 that were ear worms. All they needed was a good album title and perhaps they could guarantee success.

They decided to play it conservatively and went with the name Gordon, simply based on how popular Canadians named Gordon seemed to be in pop. They contrived themselves into a successful release and the rest is history for the band.

  9. Canadians are more likely to know The Tragically Hip than someone from the U.S. If you don't know them, check out this article and find the songs the article mentions. "Courage" & "Bobcaygeon" are my favorites.

  10. Today's song is one of the best I have heard about the emotions one feels after becoming a parent. "Trick Rider" is a hauntingly beautiful song by Gord Downie as a solo artist. He is accompanied on this by the incomparable Julie Dorion. In times like these, let this song remind us all of the importance of love.

  11. Continuing with today's 4th of July/Tragically Hip songs theme, here is the story of "Gus, the Polar Bear of Central Park". It is a terrifically scuzzy sounding song about a bear that is symbolizing the state of America as viewed by the world after the events of 9/11. Happy 4th of July to all who celebrate. Hang tough, America. The world needs you.

  12. As I count down my favourite Tragically Hip songs on this July 4th, here is the story of one of their most "American" songs, "Little Bones" from the Road Apples album. Recorded in New Orleans, "Little Bones" is filled with U.S. cultural references. The driving force of the music was influenced by The Red Hot Chili Peppers. Happy July 4th to all who celebrate.

  13. As I count down my favourite Tragically Hip songs, I come to this post about the song "Grace, Too" and a performance that, to me, illustrates what it means to have artistic integrity and, also, what it means to be Canadian. This performance is my go-to Canada Day music video. Absolutely amazing! Please enjoy.

  15. I forgot to share music on Canada Day - I was remiss.

He said, "I'm fabulously rich, come on just let's go"
She kind of bit her lip, "Jeez, I don't know"
But I can guarantee, there'll be no knock on the door
I'm total pro, that's what I'm here for

I come from downtown, born ready for you
Armed with will and determination, and grace, too

The secret rules of engagement are hard to endorse
When the appearance of conflict meets the appearance of force
But I can guarantee, there'll be no knock on the door
I'm total pro here, that's what I'm here for

I come from downtown, born ready for you
Armed with skill and it's frustration, and grace, too

    Him, here, now, ugh!
    Him, here, now, ugh!
