Der englische Singer/Songwriter und Multiinstumentalist Matt Johnson gründete sein Projekt The The bereits 1979, veröffentlichte das erste Album Burning Blue Soul 1981 jedoch unter seinem eigenen Namen. 1983 erschien dann das erste Album von The The, Soul Mining. Musikalisch ist das Album gar nicht so leicht zu greifen, ist es Post-Punk? Ist es New Wave? Ist es Art Pop? Oder doch Synth-Pop wegen der eingesetzten Synthesizern? Tatsächlich spielt das alles rein.

Ich bezeichne es hauptsächlich als Post-Punk, weil dies einerseits die Ära beschreibt, in der Matt Johnson seine musikalische Karriere gestartet hat und weil es andererseits ein gutes Beispiel ist, wie unterschiedliche Einflüsse in die Musik hineinspielen. Die Klänge sind eher düster und melancholisch, ohne depressiv zu sein. Das Album zeigt ebenfalls das Hitpotential, das The The haben, wenngleich der große Erfolg nie gelungen ist. Einige Songs haben es aber geschafft, größere und nachhaltige Aufmerksamkeit zu bekommen. Auf Soul Mining war dies vor allem This Is The Day, das auch als Vorabsingle veröffentlicht wurde und in den britischen Charts Platz 71 erreichte. Noch drei Plätze darüber landete die Single-Version von Uncertain Smile, meinem Favorit auf dem Album. Hier ist allerdings eine Neuaufnahme zu hören.

Soul Mining ist ein zeitloses Album, das Genre-Grenzen überwindet, vielfältig instrumentiert ist mit z. B. Akkordeon, Geige, Cello, Mundharmonika, Klavier sowie allerlei Percussions und von Johnsons markanter Stimme getragen wird.
