I suppose the thing I give #TheOrville the most credit for is that they don't shy away from the reality—indeed, they kind of lean into it—that if something like the holodeck actually existed, then obviously the thing it would be most used for, at least by humans (I wouldn't presume to project our weaknesses on other space-faring species), is sex.

I've been working my way through #TheOrville for the first time, posted a couple times here about how unimpressed I've been.
Then I got to the two-part "Identity" episode, and holy shit, it's like a completely different show. So, so much better. And the few episodes after that also had dramatically different tone and quality.
So I looked it up, and lo and behold they totally revamped the series starting with that episode.
Were none of you going to tell me? Why you hold out on me like that?

I binged the end of Season 1 and much of Season 2 of #TheOrville until 4:30am this morning. Season 2 is significantly better than Season 1. I'd put the quality range of Season 2's episodes at mediocre to pretty good, vs. extraordinarily bad to mediocre for Season 1.
But I don't think it's wise to skip Season 1, because it's one of those shows where there's enough continuity between episodes that you don't get the full impact of the good episodes unless you watch the show from the beginning.

#Review of #TheOrville season 1 episode 7, "Majority Rule": Everything about this episode is embarrassingly bad. Avoid watching it at all costs.

I started watching #TheOrville last week, having spotted it was on Disney+

Missed it when it first aired, wasn't entirely sure what to expect, but I'm genuinely surprised by how good it actually is.

It's an *obvious* love letter to Star Trek, and Next Generation in particular, but it does it really well, without sinking to the levels of cringe I had feared.

I'm watching the first season episode of the #TheOrville called "Krill". This is the first embarrassingly bad episode IMO. The gag that Malloy can't shut the fuck up while they're on the Krill ship got old after about five seconds and after that it was just entirely absurd and ridiculous. I had to pause the episode at one point and just cover my face with my hands and sigh a lot to build up the courage to keep watching.

Decided to start watching #TheOrville tonight. Enjoying it so far. First thing that didn't work for me: ridiculous that an argument in the captain's office could be heard on the bridge. Absurd. And for a totally unnecessary gag.

@ohiofi Oh yes! It's fantastic, like a better Star Trek than Star Trek, entertaining and insightful all at once. I would highly recommend it to any sci-fi fan.

(Some people - not me - think the first two seasons and especially the early episodes are too silly; if that's you, know that it does get less blatantly comical as the series goes on)

Too many nopes for me sadly. Discovery tried to get attention with a lot of (bad) fan service while slapping me again and again with bad writing, too much violence and annoying and unlike-able characters (at least I liked Saru). Tried to pick it up again at some point but I decided to quit during Season 2.

SFA picking up the Discovery timeline kills pretty much any interest and its trailer again is full of bullshit fan service trying to catch the interest of older fans while delivering something tthat so obviosuly unrelated in spirit.

I don't expect the stuff to be exactly like the shows we had 20-60 years ago but I expect something that doesn't kick me in the balls while watching and abandons pretty much everything what made #StarTrek stand out..

#TheOrville did so much better (at least for me) and still gotta watch all of #LowerDecks. Kind of ironic that the comedy shows got it right while original Trek has always been kind of stiff and uptight.

Holy crap. Busy rewatching #theorville and just realised that the season one episode "Majority Rules" predicted the use of #AI generated video to spread #disinformation on #socialmedia and manipulate public opinion several years before AI video was a thing.

And it was the heroes doing it???

Good SF tech prediction but that didn't age well...

We need some more of this fantastic show.

@totalclaireity It’s kind of weird how few good #SpaceOpera shows there have been in the last 30 years. I only get half a dozen shows deep before I’m wondering, “Was Space: Above and Beyond a good show?” [1]

Assuming one treats “#StarTrek” as a single show, which I think it basically is.

I wonder how many people complaining are Star Trek fans who basically want more like Star Trek, and Babylon 5 is *clearly* the closest show to Star Trek among the candidates.

Quite enjoying watching The Orville. Dismissed it when it was in first run - wasn't in the mood for it - and am I glad I waited.

Time has shown it's a very good SF series that's an obvious homage to all the Trek. But. What I didn't really expect was the amazing musical score! This is a TV show and it's scored like a movie!

I've caught myself chuckling at musical quotes here and there, the obvious one early in season one that was a wink to V'ger from ST:TMP.

I've read that the soundtrack albums are available, so must go hunt them down.

My local library had the "United Federation of Planets" "Starfleet Command" emblem on display in the maker space. And after about a week I finally found the STL file on #printables

After I found "The Orville Planetary Union Central" which was much larger, so I resized it to about 15% less.

I used Egyptian Blue, and Silk Gray PLA. I think they turned out really quite nice.

[P] I'm glad I'm not alone about this. The handling of suicide by The Orville: New Horizons was Evil. The way zombified, lemmingly homunculi reacted to suicide survivors not appreciating it was Evil. It takes such an absence of empathy to not be fucked up by this.
